ChronoBase: Ballistics Database

ChronoBase: Ballistics Database

A searchable database of real-world chronograph data organized by cartridge, ammunition, firearm, barrel length, suppressor use, and test conditions. 20 test strings • 200 chronographed shots ChronoBase starts with a rimfire-heavy dataset, but additional handgun and rifle cartridges and vetted data sources will be added as the database grows. Published velocity is a reference point, not a prediction. A box marked 1,100 fps may not produce 1,100 fps from your firearm. Barrel length, the individual firearm, suppressor use, temperature, and other test conditions can change the result. ChronoBase pairs manufacturer-rated velocity with real-world chronograph data so you can see how ammunition actually performed in specific firearms and conditions. Ballistics By The Inch showed how useful real velocity data could be. ChronoBase picks up where that project left off with a searchable, expanding database that adds filtering, comparisons, consistency data, and individual shot strings when available.

How to use ChronoBase

I built ChronoBase to make it easier to compare the chronograph data I collect without digging through spreadsheets, photos, and range notes. Start with the ammunition you are interested in, then narrow the results by firearm, barrel length, suppressor use, or test date. I use average velocity for a quick comparison, while standard deviation and extreme spread help show how consistent each string was. Open any result for the full test details and individual shot data when I have it. I collected the current ChronoBase velocity data using the Athlon RangeCraft Velocity PRO Radar Chronograph. These are real-world firearm tests, not a controlled barrel-cut series. When comparing barrel lengths, keep in mind that the firearm, suppressor use, test date, and conditions may also differ.

What affects velocity and how I compare it

Barrel length and firearm

There is no universal feet-per-second-per-inch rule. Barrel length matters, but chamber dimensions, bore condition, action type, and the individual firearm can all influence velocity too.

Ammunition

Premium ammunition often costs more because better control over components and loading can produce more consistent velocities, which can improve accuracy.

Elevation

Elevation has little direct effect on muzzle velocity, but it matters once the bullet is in flight because air density changes with altitude. I include it as useful test context.

Suppressor use

A suppressor can change measured velocity, but not by a predictable amount across every firearm and load. That is why I record suppressed and unsuppressed tests separately.

Temperature

Ammunition temperature can affect ignition and pressure, which can change velocity. I record ambient temperature when I have it, but the ammunition itself may have been warmer or cooler.

Shot count and consistency

More shots give a better picture of how a load performs. Average velocity summarizes the string, standard deviation shows how tightly the velocities cluster around that average, and extreme spread is the difference between the fastest and slowest shots.

Data quality: Some entries contain complete shot strings or chronograph summaries. Some older records are incomplete because I didn’t save every value from the original chronograph session. Missing historical values are left blank rather than estimated.
