A review of Justin Original Workboots? On this site? Yes. While our main focus is on outdoor gear, we’re always happy to share quality American made products that appeal to our readers. And the Justin Boots Double Comfort work boots that I’ve been beating the you-know-what out of for the last month and a half have a feature set in common with our favorite hiking and running shoes – they fit great, do what they were designed for, and a close inspection reveals a very high standard of construction.

You may be thinking that they’re not hiking boots, and you sure wouldn’t want to run in them, so why review them? Because as much as we all love outdoor activities, very few of us can make a career out of camping or running or cycling. We have jobs that fill in the hours between play time, which is how we pay for our gear. And Justin Original Workboots are like our long-travel MTBs, tents with carbon fiber poles, or flashlights that are crazy bright, even under water. Durable, comfortable, and they make the task at hand (foot?) more enjoyable.

When I got my pair of Justin Original Workboots, I realized that the usual two or three week review period was not going to cut it. So I crammed all sorts of use and abuse into almost six weeks. During that period, I drove a Ford 4×4 over 1,500 miles in four days, moving furniture and tools across 4 states, did some home renovations, cleared an embarrassing amount of junk out of my yard and storage, and rode my Harley Davidson to work. These boots have been run into or over by a 22 gallon air compressor, a rolling toolbox, and a coworker in his wheelchair (don’t ask). They have kicked logs from a felled tree I cut up for my neighbor, stomped old baseboard moldings in half, and gotten blasted with debris while doing yard work. The left toe box is burnished from the shifter on my motorcycle. The soles have a green tinge from deep grass. They’ve developed a bit of a patina made up of scratches and stains from “getting stuff done”. In other words, I put these work boots to work.

What else can I tell you about them? Well, the color is Aged Bark and they have a 6 inch upper. I selected the steel toe option, knowing this would get put to the test. The shank is fiberglass, for rigidity without too much weight, and they are ASTM electrical hazard rated, for those that really work in them. And the Double Comfort® System is not just marketing speak. It’s an orthotic insert that works with the insole to provide an unexpected level of comfort. I still wouldn’t hike in them, but I can wear them all day without complaint. Another huge bonus was the polyurethane outsole. All grip, no slip. Unlike another brand designed by a German doctor, these American made boots (since 1879) have not sent me slipping and sliding. If you’ve ever put a foot down at a stop light, only to nearly drop a 600+ pound motorcycle, you’ll know what I mean. Of course, they were just fine around the garage too.

Fit and finish inside and out would win approval from my Italian friends in the footwear industry. The stitching is straight and even, plus double and triple where it’s needed most. They look so nice that I could probably get away with wearing them in the office, although that may intimidate some people. A combination of standard eyelets and speed lace hooks makes putting them on and getting a good fit pretty easy. I did go through several pairs of socks until I found some that gave the ideal fit. The toe box is ample enough, but the heel cup felt looser than I prefer. A sock that was a bit thicker in the heel was just right. Your results may vary, but I doubt you’ll be disappointed.

If you need a pair of boots for your day job, or your weekends are filled with hard work, you should certainly check out Justin Original Workboots. They have a huge range of standard and tall boots, with or without steel toes, as well as several waterproof options. Pricing is fair, considering that they should give you many years of service. And they are made in America, by proud American workers, which keeps our tax dollars where they belong, helping local economies. Justinoriginalworkboots.com

Brian,

Thanks for the great review. I am glad you really put the boots to the test. We work hard to make a great American boot at a fair price, and it is gratifying when we pass the test. Honestly, I wouldn’t hit the trail with them either, but in the applications for which they are intended, you surely get it. Thanks for going off script with our boots!

Cheers,

Bob McAllister (N’tl Sales Mgr. JOW)
