A couple months ago, I bought a few Nite Ize Figure 9’s at a local outdoor store. As I have mentioned before, I just love knots and string. The simplicity of the material combined with the endless possibilities and sometimes puzzle solving nature of using string/rope and knots is too fun. Sometimes though, it is best just to get the job done as easily and quickly as possible. In these cases, the Figure 9 really shines.
Nite Ize makes the Figure 9 in both plastic and metal and a few sizes. I got the metallic ones in the small size since I was planning to use them on hammock tarp guy lines. The size small is a little bigger than a quarter and weighs next to nothing at just 3 grams each. The small Figure 9 works with line ranging from 1 to 3/16 of an inch and is rated to hold 50 pounds. These line tighteners are pretty flexible. Nite Ize provides great instructions on how to use the Figure 9 using a loop or fixed end system. Videos can be found on the web detailing the routing of the line through the Figure 9.
I used the Nite Ize Figure 9 to secure the edges and ridge line of my tarp in some fairly high wind. Securing the line was really simple and the Figure 9‘s never failed to hold onto the line. I even used some hollow core dyneema line with these with no problem even though this line tends to be a bit more slippery than some.
I still enjoy using my taut line hitches, lark‘s heads and other knots, but I carry these for the quickness and ease of setup. I can envision a real benefit to using the Figure 9 if, say, my fingers are cold, wet, or when trying to set up camp in the dark. At only $2.49 each, you really can‘t go wrong with this product. I actually think I need a couple more, and will pick some up the next time I make it into the store. If you need a few Figure 9‘s and some reflective guy lines, Nite Ize offers a complete Tent Line kit which includes 4 Figure 9‘s and 4.8 feet of line for $10.09.
