This is precisely the kind of new goodies that my inner geek will be checking out at Interbike:
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Sept. 18, 2008 – Safe Bicycling Innovations, creator of the Safety Illumination of Rider (SIR) Light, today announced it will be showing a working prototype of its innovative light during the indoor portion of the Interbike Expo, Sept. 24-26, at booth #250.
The SIR Light is the only bicycle light on the market that makes a rider more visible through direct illumination. The SIR Light, complete with 16 LED lights (eight lights directed on the right and left legs, respectively), mounts on virtually any standard seat post or seat tube and focuses a set of divergent light beams forward towards the back of a rider’s moving legs and oncoming traffic.
“Bicycle lighting has not significantly changed since the time of the generator or battery operated lights which were introduced more than 50 years ago,” said Dr. James Carillo, creator of the SIR Light. “The premise has always been to direct a light source out from the bike toward the oncoming motorist in hopes of being recognized. The problem with that is the source of light does nothing to identify the rider as a bicyclist. I know from personal experience, the dangers that come from not being visible to motorists.”
Dr. James Carillo, a general anesthesiologist, created the SIR Light after a near accident with a motorist while commuting to work on a dark morning. His strobe headlight and rear taillight surprisingly, were not enough light to warn a driver backing out of a driveway that he was about to pass by on his bike. It was this experience that awakened Dr. Carillo’s need to create a better way for cyclists, not just bikes, to be visible on the road.
While nearly every bike light on the market sends light (or a reflection of light) at the approaching motorist, only the SIR Light puts a glow on and around the rider and bicycle, making them visible to a motorist whether they are approaching from the side, back or front of the rider.
The SIR Light improves rider visibility with the following features:
- 16 LED (8 mm) light elements: eight LEDs directed to left and right legs respectively
- Multiplanar mounting of LEDs to produce a D-shaped light beam that illuminates
- upward toward the hips
- forward toward the thighs and
- downward towards the calves and heels of rider
- Velcro mounting for quick and convenient mounting and removal
- Silicone gripper material assures stable mounting
- Recessed On/Off/Strobe switch
- Rechargeable NiMH batteries
- Charges from USB port, as well as wall outlet
- Three hour charge time for four hours of run time
- MSRP: $99.99
