Coghlan’s Fire Disc is one of the easiest ways to get a fire going, and in a pinch, can be used on its own for heat or cooking. That makes them ideal to keep with your camping gear, as well as in your 72 hour kit.
Each 3.5 ounce Fire Disc is four inches in diameter, and about an inch thick. They’re made entirely from cedar and wax, which means they are not only waterproof, but safe to store indoors or out. Unlike liquid or gas fuels, you can keep the Fire Disc just about anywhere in your home, even with your food storage. And you can throw a couple in your car too, without worrying about creating a hazard.
Coghlan’s Fire DiscsCoghlan’s states that their Fire Discs are great for starting campfires or wood stoves, and we have to agree. No need to use the whole Fire Disc either. If you’re just getting a fire started, one quarter to one half should be plenty. If you need some heat in an emergency, or want to cook a small meal (or boil water) over an open flame, use one half to one whole Fire Disc. Although we don’t think it would be too easy to snuff one out, you can even extinguish one and reuse it.
Considering that the Fire Disc is really just sawdust and wax, it’s pretty handy. That also means that Coghlan’s has effectively made something from nothing, since sawdust is usually considered a waste product. The Fire Disc is also made in America. Yes, not exactly a source of national pride, but it’s good to see that we’re taking leftovers from the waste stream, and turning it into something useful. (It would be ironic if they were imported) So what does that leave us? We found the Fire Disc is easy to use and provides about 30 minutes of heat. After a bit of online shopping, we found them for under $2 each. You can probably find them at your favorite camping or outdoor sporting goods store for about the same price. So for less than $20, you can stock your 72 hour kit and have spares for your next weekend camping trip. coghlans.com

Pretty cool fire starter! Even better that it’s made in the good ol US of A!
