Commuter Essentials – SKS Multi-Tools

Some consider the bicycle to be the most perfect machine, at least when it comes to transportation. And while we’re certainly not going to argue that, even the simplest of machines can suffer from mechanical issues or get slightly out of adjustment. On the bright side, routine maintenance and even emergency repairs rarely require more than the most basic tools. For the average bicycle, that’s a couple of allen (hex) wrenches, as well as maybe a couple of screwdrivers and spoke wrenches. There are a few other specialized tools, such as the chain tool and Torx 25 for disc brakes that more advanced roadside mechanics may want to have on hand. SKS is more than happy to oblige with the following multi-tools.

At the top of the food chain is the 235 gram CT-Worx, with 20 functions. Ideal for touring, e-bikes, and bikes equipped with an internal geared hub (IGH), the CT-Worx has 8, 10, 13 and 15mm open end wrenches, 6, 11, and 12mm box wrenches, with 14 and 15 gauge spoke wrenches built into the side. A diecast chain breaker that works with Shimano 8 or 9 speed chains, as well as Campagnolo 10 speed chains fits neatly into one end, while 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8mm allen wrenches, plus a pair of screwdrivers, fold out from the sides. Covering everything up when not is use are two detachable tire levers.

If your touring needs don’t involve the extra open end and box wrenches, consider the Toolbox Travel. It includes a similar chain tool that can be used with 8, 9, or 10 speed chains, seven allen wrenches (2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8), philips and flat blade screwdrivers, a T25, 14 and 15 gauge spoke wrenches, 8mm and 10mm box wrenches, and two tire levers. That’s 18 functions, with a weight of 223 grams, making it compact and light enough to stow anywhere, even the rear pocket of a jersey.

A slightly lighter version, the Toolbox Race does without the chain tool or box wrenches, and ditches the 2mm and 8mm allen wrenches. It’s still a 15 function tool, but the weight drops to 128 grams. Both enjoy soft pads and an easy to grip form factor for excellent ergonomics.

For general use, the Tom 18 packs 18 functions into only 184 grams. Covering essentially the same range as the Toolbox Travel, it replaces the box wrenches with a bottle opener (essential!) and includes a compartment for a spare chain pin.

The Tom 14 is a very basic tool, forgoing the chain tool and including only one tire lever. But it does offer the 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 allen wrenches, a T25, 14 and 15 gauge spoke wrenches, and the philips and flat blade screwdrivers, along with that essential bottle opener/brake pad tool. Weight is 129 grams.

Quick adjustments on the trail generally don’t require more than a handful of allen wrenches (2.5-6), the screwdriver set, and the T25. Get those, along with two tire levers, in the T-Knox.

When you’re doing routine maintenance at home, the Bit-Worx keeps the commonly used tools handy. It comes with a set of allen bits, sizes 2-6, screwdrivers, and a pair of tire levers. Everything fits inside, and the case itself is the driver for the bits. Although weight is less of a concern when you’re not carrying it on the bike, it’s only 95 grams.

Note that most of them offer chrome-vanadium construction, which is a tool grade steel for lasting durability. If you’re shopping for another cyclist, or even yourself this holiday season, it’s hard to go wrong with any of these tools from SKS. SKS-Germany.com
