OPMOD, or Optics Planet Modifications, are “Unique items that combine unbelievable value with products specially modified to meet the needs of our customers.” Now, I’m as skeptical as the next guy when it comes to bargains. And I have to watch my budget too. But the OPMOD line does have some good deals. More importantly, a recurring theme across the line is FDE options. I’m a fan of the “Tactical peanut butter” shades, and that definitely caught my eye. So here are a few of my favorites. Note that it’s worth checking prices on all the OPMOD items, as some are priced even lower than that other amazon-sized online retailer.
Vortex OPMOD Viper 1×24 mm 6 MOA Red Dot Sight
All the features of the regular Vortex Viper red dot, but in a shade of FDE not normally available. Yes, it leans a bit more towards bronze than FDE, but it’s still a nice color. One of my friends mentioned that it looks like someone got a little chocolate in the peanut butter. Either way, it should look better on an FDE build than plain black. And it would add a nice contrast to a black rifle as well. The Viper usually runs $229 or so, with various deals available on different sites. Optics Planet offers the OPMOD Viper for just $199.
EOTech OPMOD EXPS 3 Holographic Reflex Red Dot Sight
EOTech optics have been a pretty standard choice for the AR platform for some time now. The EOTech EXPS 3 is a tried and true optic. It’s durable, and the circle with 1 MOA dots in the center makes it easy to acquire targets and adjust for bullet drop. EOTech does offer this in tan as well, but the OPMOD EXPS 3 is a nicer shade, in my opinion. And the current price of $692.99 should put a little green back in your pocket.
SIG SAUER OPMOD Exclusive Romeo-MSR 1x20mm 2 MOA Green Dot Sight
Here’s another great (and much more affordable) option for your AR or PCC. Sig’s Romeo MSR features a simple 2 MOA green dot, for better daylight visibility than a red dot. It’s got a taller skeletonized mount for co-witnessing with irons too. And it even comes with flip-up caps. Not only is the color closer to the usual FDE, but the OPMOD Romeo MSR is currently under $100. Hard to beat that deal.
Holosun OPMOD AEMS 1x Red (or green) Dot Sight
I couldn’t leave Holosun out of this article. So here’s the Holosun OPMOD AEMS 1x Red Dot Sight. It’s got a wide field of view in a small frame, with their famous Solar Failsafe offering up to 50,000 hour battery life. It’s also got Holosun’s Multi-Reticle System and Shake Awake Technology. All wrapped up in a tasty FDE finish. Choose from red at $359.99 or green at $386.99.
These are just a small sampling of the products in the Optics Planet OPMOD line. When I last checked, there were 89 different products and 184 different models. So if you like saving money, check them out. And if you like saving money and FDE, definitely give them a look.
