My daughter has helped out with several reviews, and she really enjoys some of the outdoor gear we’ve gotten to write about. We’ve had her try at least three backpacks, sent her off to camp with a sleeping bag, sleeping pad, and a notepad, (for writing down her observations) and even let her set up a tent in the house for two weeks to test a lantern during winter break. But I’ll be the first to admit that we’ve been a bit light on covering outdoor gear specifically for kids. Which is why I was pleased to read that Lorpen is offering their performance socks sized for kids.
Although we haven’t actually gotten any for her to try out, the Jr. Light Hiker Socks should be a big hit with little hikers, or any kids that are active in the outdoors. Unlike some socks that are nothing more than cotton with kid-oriented graphics, the Jr. Light Hikers pack all the technology of the larger sizes. It’s a mix of 38% Merino wool, 37% acrylic, 15% Nylon, and 10% Lycra, which should provide an excellent balance of comfort and performance. The wicking properties of the wool and acrylic will keep them dry and blister-free, while the bit of extra cushion should serve them well on the longer outings. Lycra helps the sock retain its shape, and the nylon contributes to overall durability. Best of all, they’re machine washable, and are easy on the budget, with a suggested retail of $9.99 per pair.
Need something a bit heavier? Maybe you’re hiking in colder climates, out for longer than just an afternoon, or your child finds they get a better fit from a slightly thicker sock. If so, then the Lorpen Mid-Weight Jr. Hiker might be more to their liking. Like the Jr. Light Hiker, the new Mid-Weight Jr. Hiker is also made of 38% Merino Wool, 37% Acrylic, 15% Nylon, and 10% Lycra. It’s just a bit thicker, which is handy when the temperature drops, or you’re on the trail a bit longer. This cooler weather option is still reasonably priced at $12.99 per pair.
While we have written about them on several occasions, it’s worth repeating a bit of background on Lorpen. They’re a Spanish company that has been around since 1985, and they can now be found in more than 60 countries worldwide, from the smallest of independent shops to the largest outdoor retailers. Although they are hardly a newcomer to the footwear industry, they have only been selling their wares in Canada since 2001, and the United States since 2004. But they are making inroads, thanks to their dedication to offering socks for just about every outdoor activity, from running to cycling to skiing and snowboarding. In addition, each sock they produce combines high tech design, the best materials available, and strict attention to detail and quality control. This has made them fans among weekend warrior amateurs and top professionals alike, all over the world. We like them, and we think you will too.
