Mossberg Shockwave Shell Carrier Review (SureShell Rail)

A Mossberg Shockwave shell carrier adds real utility to this compact firearm. The Mesa Tactical SureShell Carrier and Rail provides on-receiver ammo storage and a Picatinny rail in one system. Because of this, it is one of the most practical upgrades for the platform. If you want a more capable Shockwave, this upgrade is an easy way to get there. After testing this Mossberg Shockwave shell carrier, I’ve found increased utility and (a bonus!) reduced recoil.

Why Add a Mossberg Shockwave Shell Carrier?

The Mossberg Shockwave is compact and powerful. However, it lacks built-in shell storage and accessory mounting options. A Mossberg Shockwave shell carrier solves both problems.

  • Keeps extra shells on the gun
  • Adds a full-length Picatinny rail

As a result, the Shockwave becomes more practical for defensive or range use. The added weight also helps to tame the recoil a bit, which is an unintended benefit.

Mesa Tactical SureShell Build and Materials

Mesa Tactical offers this Mossberg Shockwave shell carrier in two versions. One uses a 6061-T6 aluminum yoke. The other uses a polymer yoke. This allows shooters to choose between maximum durability or reduced weight.

The aluminum model uses a Santoprene elastomer retention system. It holds shells securely and resists wear. In contrast, the polymer version uses a dual rubber friction system. It also provides strong retention while keeping weight down.

The integrated rail is a hard-anodized MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny rail. It accepts optics, lights, or lasers. Overall, both versions feel solid and well-built.

Capacity and Compatibility

This Mossberg Shockwave shell carrier is designed specifically for the 14-inch Shockwave platform. Depending on the model, it holds four or six shells.

The integrated rail adds more than storage. It also provides a stable mounting platform for accessories. Because of this, the firearm becomes far more useful.

Installing the Mossberg Shockwave Shell Carrier

Installation is simple. After verifying that your firearm is unloaded, slide the barrel clamp onto the barrel and over the barrel ring. The carrier uses the factory-drilled and tapped receiver holes. A mounting cleat goes on top of the receiver, using those existing holes. Attach the entire rail assembly to the cleat, using the included hardware. Align the barrel clamp. This may require tapping with a dowel or brass rod. Once aligned, attach the carrier to the clamp.

Mesa Tactical products are designed for ease of installation at home. No major gunsmithing is required. However, proper alignment and correct torque are important. The aluminum backplate keeps the system secure once installed. Additionally, most users can complete the installation quickly with basic tools. Immediately after installation, I topped it off with a Viridian RFX25, which is a green dot with a nice, wide window.

Function and Range Performance

At the range, this Mossberg Shockwave shell carrier improves both speed and convenience. With Mesa’s full-length rail, my optic is positioned for optimum situational awareness.  That big 20×28 window and bright green dot are easy for my eyes to pick up. So it’s just a matter of putting the dot on my target and pulling the trigger.

The rail and hardware add nearly a pound (14.9 ounces, not including ammo or optic), which certainly changes the felt recoil a bit. That alone would probably make this a worthwhile upgrade for some shooters. Add in the option to mount a weapon light, and the Shockwave becomes a more capable defensive platform.

Having shells on the receiver makes reloads a bit faster if you put in the time to practice. Running drills at home with dummy rounds, then refining on the range is something I need to do more. My issue is that I’ve had to mount my rounds brass up in previous carriers, for extra security. The SureShell carrier is much more secure, so I’ll be able to mount them brass down, for easier loading. During testing, the retention system held shells securely under recoil. Nothing shifted or loosened.

Durability and Long-Term Use

The aluminum yoke is extremely rugged and handles heavy use well. In fact, it is the better choice for hard or frequent use. Meanwhile, the polymer version saves weight while still offering good durability. While the lack of compatibility with my Magpul forend is a disappointment, Mesa Tactical is addressing that with a new (not yet released) forend.

The retention system uses rubber components. Over time, rubber may wear. However, Mesa Tactical replaces the tubing at no charge. The company also backs the product with a lifetime warranty.

Drawbacks

  • Adds weight and bulk to the firearm
  • Accessories on the rail increase size further
  • Rubber retention parts may wear with heavy use
  • Not currently compatible with the Magpul forend

Even so, most users will find these tradeoffs minor.

Verdict: Is This Mossberg Shockwave Shell Carrier Worth It?

This Mossberg Shockwave shell carrier improves both function and versatility. You get extra ammunition capacity and a mounting platform in one upgrade.

Overall, the Mesa Tactical SureShell system is practical, durable, and well-designed. If you want a more capable Shockwave for defense or range use, this upgrade makes a clear difference. Check it out along with their other excellent products at MesaTactical.com.

As always, I’d like to thank Mesa Tactical for sending their Mossberg Shockwave shell carrier and rail for my testing and evaluation.
