After going over my notes for the 64 oz Growler from Avex, I did a quick Google search. I’ll do this sometimes, just to see if there are any details I missed. And so I was a bit surprised to see that most reviews were about how long it keeps water cold, not beer. Clearly, not everyone buys them for carrying beer. Perhaps it’s time to change how I approach my reviews of growlers?
Nah, just kidding! Because you certainly can carry water or other cold drinks in a growler. And it will stay cold for hours and hours. But water doesn’t go flat, and it’s not too terrible to drink at room temperature. Can you say the same about your favorite craft beer or micro brew? No, you can’t. And that’s why we have 64 ounce growlers. Because we like our beer cold, and sometimes, you want to bring enough to share.
As luck would have it, we have a new brew pub not far from our house. Previously, we had to drive 80+ miles round-trip, just to get our growlers filled. Of course, we usually stayed for a meal or appetizers too, so it’s not like it was a waste of gas. With this new place, it seemed like the perfect time to test out a new growler. Avex 64 oz Growler in hand, we headed off to lunch. We had plans to bring home some of our favorite brews for the rest of the weekend. You call it drinking, we call it product testing.
Pro tip: fill your growler with icy water before leaving home. When you hand it to the bartender, he (or she) will dump it out for you. And then they can put your precious brew in a super chill growler. Trust us, it stays colder longer that way. Avex says their Growler should keep drinks hot for 22 hours, and cold for 43. You’ll want to follow the pre-chill (or heat) recommendation to see those numbers. Since we had plans to finish it off the next day, it didn’t matter as much. But when it comes to beer, always follow best practices.
Since this isn’t our first Avex review we weren’t too surprised the following day to find our beer chilled, and delicious. And it wasn’t flat either. Because the lid on this growler seals up well, which is key to maintaining carbonation. Speaking of lids, this one is attached, which makes it much harder to misplace. That’s another feature we appreciate. If there is one drawback, it’s that there are only two color options. You’ll have to choose between black or gray.
So what’s the verdict? Well, the Avex Capacitor Stainless™growler is a winner. With 18/8 stainless double wall vacuum construction, it insulates very well, to keep your drinks hot or cold. On one side of the lid is a handle for easy carrying. On the bottom, rubber keeps it from sliding around. When it’s time to wash it, you can throw it in the dishwasher (top rack only). Although it has a very reasonable MSRP of $54.99, you can find it for less on Amazon. If you don’t have a growler, now is a great time to get one. And Avex would be a great choice too.
