In order to keep up with news and trends, I have some Google Alerts set up to help search out items of interest. All during Bike to Work Week, Google fed me a steady diet of articles from big city and small town online newspapers, spotlighting solo riders, offices full of commuters, and “man and woman on the street” interviews with the casual riders that made it a point to participate for the week, as well as those that commute year-round.
It’s nice to see that not only are cyclists of all backgrounds getting out there and raising their profile, the various news outlets are treating it as more than a novelty. Fitness, environmental concerns, and simply saving gas were just some of the reasons cited for commuting by bike.
Let’s hope that whether gas prices go up or down, this trend continues, and we see more and more bicycles on the road.
