A large first aid kit makes sense when you want to be better prepared, but not everyone wants to build one from scratch. Buying bandages, gauze, wraps, burn supplies, gloves, cold packs, and small tools one item at a time takes more effort than many people want to put into it. That is where the SurviveX Large First Aid Kit fits.

This is a ready-made first aid kit for home, vehicle, travel, camping, and outdoor use. I would not treat it as a dedicated trauma kit, and I would not make it my primary range medical kit. Instead, I see it as a convenient, well-organized kit for the smaller problems that happen more often than we expect.

After going through the kit, we brought it on a road trip. That is probably the best way to describe where it makes sense. It covers common first aid needs such as cuts, scrapes, minor burns, sprains, and basic wound care. You may pay extra for convenience and organization, but you get peace of mind in return.

This review is based on going through the kit, inspecting the contents, looking at how everything is organized, and deciding where it fits in real use. I did not open or use every sealed first aid item, since many of those supplies are single-use and should stay clean and ready until needed.

Check the current price and availability for the SurviveX Large First Aid Kit on Amazon.

SurviveX Large First Aid Kit Review Summary

The SurviveX Large First Aid Kit is for people who want a practical, pre-built first aid kit without having to buy every item separately. It is larger and more useful than a tiny glove box kit, but still easy enough to keep in a car, closet, camper, or travel bag.

If you already have emergency medical training and know exactly what supplies you want, building your own kit may make more sense. You can choose every item yourself and skip anything you do not need. But not everyone wants to do that. Some people just want a kit that is already assembled, easy to understand, and ready to use.

That is the buyer this kit is for.

What Comes in the SurviveX Large First Aid Kit?

The piece count is a little inconsistent. SurviveX has listed the kit as 250 pieces in some places, while the Amazon listing and pricing currently point to 240 pieces. For this review, I am going with the Amazon listing. Either way, the exact count matters less than the types of supplies included and how well the kit is organized.

Wound care supplies are grouped into labeled sections, including dressings, gauze, and eye pads.

The kit includes wound care supplies such as Zip Stitch wound closures, gauze, non-adherent dressings, a pressure bandage, and strip closures. It also includes burn care items, including hydrogel burn gel. For basic CPR support, SurviveX includes a CPR mask with a valve, gloves, and instructions.

The tool and support items include 7-inch trauma shears, an 18-inch conforming splint, and a triangular bandage. For cleaning and hygiene, the kit includes nitrile gloves, BZK antiseptic wipes, alcohol prep pads, and triple antibiotic ointment. It also includes emergency items such as a thermal blanket, glow sticks, and a whistle.

In addition to basic wound care, the kit includes support and emergency items such as glow sticks, a triangular bandage, and wound dressing.

Like most high-piece-count first aid kits, some of the 240-piece total comes from smaller items and duplicates. That is not automatically a bad thing. Duplicates are useful when you are dealing with more than one minor injury, or when you use the kit over time and need extra bandages, wipes, or gauze.

The Zip Stitch wound closure strips are one of the more interesting additions. They make the SurviveX kit feel more complete than cheaper kits that are mostly bandages, wipes, and gauze. They do not turn this into a dedicated trauma kit, but they do give you another option for cuts where a regular adhesive bandage may not be the best fit.

Organization and Ease of Use

The bag itself seems durable enough and pretty well made. I would not treat it like a hard case, but for a soft-sided first aid kit, it feels appropriate for home, vehicle, and travel use. In addition to the top and side handles, it has a belt and buckle, and the entire rear panel is attached via hook and loop fasteners. A shoulder strap is stored inside as well.

The labeled compartments are the bigger advantage. A large first aid kit can become annoying fast if everything is loose or hard to find. SurviveX gives the kit enough structure that you can open it, find the right section, and get what you need without digging through the entire bag.

Larger pockets keep wraps, support bandages, and other bulky supplies separated instead of loose in the bag.

That matters because a first aid kit is easier to use when everything has a place. If you need a bandage, wrap, burn dressing, or cold pack, you should not have to dig through a pile of loose packets and wrappers to find it. I would still go through the kit myself and learn where everything is before relying on it. Even so, the layout gives you a much better starting point than a cheap, cluttered kit.

First Aid Guide, Fever Strips, and a Missing Flashlight

The kit also includes a first aid guide, which deserves a separate mention. Like any guide, you should read it before you need it. An emergency is the wrong time to figure out where supplies are located or start learning basic first aid steps. At minimum, take a few minutes to review the guide, the kit layout, and the contents before storing it in a vehicle, closet, or travel bag.

SurviveX also includes fever strips for checking temperature. That makes sense for a general home, travel, or family kit.

What I did not find was a small, low-power flashlight or penlight. That feels like an oversight. A simple light can help with checking pupils, looking at a cut or scrape, finding supplies in low light, or dealing with an issue on the side of the road at night. It is an inexpensive addition, but I think it belongs with a kit like this.

Where This Kit Makes Sense

The SurviveX Large First Aid Kit makes the most sense for everyday preparedness. I work on guns, use tools, work in the yard, fix things around the house, and spend plenty of time outdoors. In other words, I find plenty of ways to get a cut, scrape, burn, or minor injury.

For those situations, having a larger first aid kit nearby is useful. It is also a good fit for road trips, camping, family travel, and anyone who spends time outdoors. Most of those situations are not worst-case scenarios. They are the smaller problems that come up at the most inopportune moments.

That convenience is the real appeal of this kit. It gives you more options than a tiny first aid kit, and it saves you from hunting through gas stations, hotel front desks, or convenience stores when someone needs something simple.

Where This Kit Falls Short

No pre-built first aid kit is perfect, and this one is no exception. The biggest limitation is that you should not confuse it with a dedicated trauma kit.

Because many of my readers are shooters, that distinction is worth making. The SurviveX kit may still be useful at the range for minor cuts, scrapes, burns, or other common problems. I just would not make it my only medical kit there. For range use, I would still want a separate shooter’s first aid kit with the right supplies and training for more serious injuries.

That is not a knock against SurviveX. It is simply a different type of kit. This one belongs in the general first aid category.

What I Would Add to the SurviveX Large First Aid Kit

The first thing I would add is a small, low-power flashlight or penlight. It does not need to be expensive, but it belongs with a kit like this. Removing the shoulder strap from its spot inside would make more than enough room for this.

The kit includes extra comfort and cleanup items, but I would still add a small flashlight or penlight.

For a home or travel kit, I would add basic over-the-counter medications that match your household. That might include pain relievers, allergy medication, antacids, electrolyte packets, or anything else your family commonly uses. Be sure to store medications properly and check expiration dates.

For a vehicle kit, I would consider extra gloves, an additional emergency blanket, and any items specific to your climate. If you live where it gets very hot or very cold, think about how temperature may affect certain supplies.

For anyone who spends time around firearms, tools, machinery, or remote outdoor areas, I would keep a separate trauma kit. That should include quality components and, more importantly, the training to use them. A tourniquet in a bag is not the same as knowing when and how to apply one.

Final Verdict: Is the SurviveX Large First Aid Kit Worth Buying?

The SurviveX Large First Aid Kit is worth considering if you want a comprehensive, well-organized first aid kit for home, car, travel, camping, or general preparedness. It is not the cheapest way to assemble medical supplies, and it is not a substitute for a dedicated trauma kit. However, it solves a real problem for people who want to prepare better without building a kit from scratch.

Packed up, the SurviveX kit is easy to store in a closet, vehicle, camper, or travel bag.

For my own use, I see this as a practical home or vehicle kit. It is not the last word in emergency medical preparedness, but it is a much better starting point than the random collection of old bandages and ointment packets a lot of people probably have in a drawer somewhere.

If you already know exactly what you want, build your own kit. If you want a convenient large first aid kit that covers common situations and gives you a solid base to work from, the SurviveX kit makes sense.

SurviveX Large First Aid Kit FAQs

Is the SurviveX Large First Aid Kit a trauma kit?

No. I would not consider this a dedicated trauma kit. It is better viewed as a large general-purpose first aid kit for common first aid needs. If you want supplies for severe bleeding, gunshot wounds, or penetrating trauma, I would keep a separate trauma kit and get the proper training.

Is this a good first aid kit for the car?

Yes. This is one of the better use cases for it. A car first aid kit should cover common travel problems, minor injuries, and unexpected situations away from home. This kit is larger than a basic glove box kit, but that extra size gives you more options. You will most likely need to store it in the trunk or rear cargo area.

Is this kit good for home use?

Yes. For home use, this kit makes sense for cuts, scrapes, minor burns, basic wound care, and everyday injuries around the house, yard, garage, or kitchen.

Is this a good first aid kit for camping or outdoor use?

Yes. This kit makes sense for camping, road trips, and general outdoor use. It gives you more supplies than a tiny travel kit without forcing you to build a full custom kit from scratch.

Should I build my own first aid kit instead?

If you have training and know exactly what supplies you want, building your own kit may be better. If you want convenience and broad coverage without chasing down every item individually, a pre-built kit like this is a good starting point.

Does the SurviveX Large First Aid Kit include aspirin or other oral medication?

No, it does not include aspirin, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, allergy medicine, or other oral medications. The kit does include triple antibiotic ointment, but I would add any basic medications your household commonly uses.

What should I add to this kit?

That depends on your needs. For home use, consider medications and personal medical items. If you’re keeping it in your vehicle, consider extra gloves, a small flashlight or penlight, and climate-specific supplies. For range or trauma use, keep a separate trauma kit with proper supplies and training.

The post Front Sight Blurry? Here Are Some Fixes appeared first on Industry Outsider.

Is your front sight blurry? If so, you are not alone. It is a common issue for shooters, especially as you get older and iron sights become harder to focus on.

At first, it may not seem like much. However, over time, your sight picture starts to soften, and your groups begin to open up. Everything else can still feel right. Your trigger control is solid, your stance is consistent, and your ammo has not changed. Yet something is clearly off.

In most cases, this is not a gear problem. It is a focus problem. The good news is that there are several practical ways to fix it.

The Real Issue: Your Eyes Are Changing

Iron sight shooting depends on your ability to focus on one specific distance. You want to lock onto the front sight, while the rear sight and the target remain slightly out of focus.

When you are younger, your eyes shift between those distances quickly and without effort. Over time, that flexibility fades. As a result, your eye struggles to snap into focus on the front sight, even though you can still see the target clearly. That is why this problem feels so specific. It is not that your vision is bad. Instead, your eyes are having trouble focusing where you need them to.

There Is More Than One Way to Fix It

There are several ways to deal with a blurry front sight, and the right solution depends on how you shoot and what kind of setup you prefer. In many cases, shooters combine more than one of these fixes.

Fix #1: Use Reading Glasses to Shift Your Focus

For many shooters, a simple pair of low-power reading glasses makes a noticeable difference. They shift your focal point just enough to bring the front sight back into sharp focus. You do not need a strong prescription. In most cases, something around +1.00 or +1.25 is enough. The goal is not to sharpen the target. Instead, you want the front sight to look crisp again.

A simple option like Readers.com makes it easy to try a few different strengths without spending much. Keep a pair in your range bag and test what works with your natural shooting position. This is often the easiest place to start if your sight picture has started to soften. If this solves your issue, you can look for shooting glasses with built-in correction, or readers with polycarbonate lenses for an added degree of safety. Prescription shooting glasses are another option as well, though they are going to be much more expensive than some readers.

Fix #2: Upgrade to a Brighter Front Sight

Even with good vision, a plain black front sight can be hard to pick up depending on lighting conditions. If your eyes are already working harder to focus, that problem becomes more noticeable. Fiber optic sights and high-visibility front sights make the front sight easier to see and faster to pick up. They do not fix your vision. However, they reduce the effort your eye has to put in.

Tag Precision Fiber Optic Front Sight.

If you are running a rimfire pistol, there are a lot of solid options. I have covered several in my guide to Taurus TX22 upgrades, including brighter sights that improve visibility. You can also take a closer look at TX22 fiber optic sights, which are designed specifically to improve contrast and speed.

If your sight picture feels slow or inconsistent, this is often the most practical upgrade you can make.

Fix #3: Switch to a Red Dot or Green Dot

At some point, many shooters decide to stop fighting iron sights altogether. A red dot removes the need to focus on multiple distances and lets you keep your attention on the target. Instead of aligning front and rear sights, you place a dot where you want the shot to go. As a result, your eyes have a much easier job.

Viridian RFX42 Green Dot Sight installed on a SIG P365X.

It is also worth noting that not everyone sees red equally well. In many cases, a green dot stands out better, especially in bright conditions. If you are considering making the switch, take a look at the best TX22 red dot optics. For example, options like the Viridian RFX42 green dot can be easier to pick up and track.

For many shooters, this ends up being the most effective long-term solution.

A Quick Note on Rifle Scopes

This article focuses on iron sights, fiber optics, and reflex-style optics. However, if a rifle scope suddenly looks off, the issue is often different. Unlike the gradual loss of front sight focus, a blurry reticle can come down to setup. In most cases, the diopter adjustment is the problem. The diopter controls how sharp the reticle appears to your eye. If it is not set correctly, your eye will constantly try to compensate. As a result, fatigue sets in quickly.

Take a minute to set it properly. Look at a blank background, adjust the diopter until the reticle snaps into focus instantly, and then leave it alone.

Small Things That Make a Difference

Take short breaks: give your eyes a chance to reset

Blink regularly: dry eyes can make your vision look hazy

Pay attention to lighting: brighter conditions make it easier to maintain focus

Final Thoughts

If your front sight looks blurry, the cause is usually simple. Your eyes are not focusing the way they used to, and your setup has not adapted yet. The fix might be as easy as a pair of reading glasses. It might be a brighter front sight. Or it might be time to move to a red or green dot.

In many cases, it ends up being a combination of those things. Once you solve the focus problem, your accuracy tends to come right back. You are not losing your ability to shoot. You just need to adjust how you see the shot.
The post Front Sight Blurry? Here Are Some Fixes appeared first on Industry Outsider.

Ruger 10/22 upgrades can turn a basic rimfire rifle into a lighter plinker, a more accurate target gun, a better suppressor host, or a full custom build. That is one of the biggest reasons the 10/22 has stayed popular for so long. It is affordable, reliable, easy to work on, and backed by one of the largest aftermarket ecosystems in the firearms world.

The challenge is figuring out which Ruger 10/22 upgrades actually make sense for your rifle. Not every part solves the same problem. A better trigger can make the rifle easier to shoot well, a barrel can improve accuracy or reduce weight, and a stock or chassis can completely change how the rifle fits and handles. Other upgrades, like magazines, extractors, firing pins, and control parts, are more about reliability and convenience.

This guide breaks down the best Ruger 10/22 upgrades by category so you can start with the parts that match your goals instead of buying random accessories you may not need.

A quick note on links: When possible, I include manufacturer links along with Brownells and MidwayUSA links. The manufacturer page is often the best place to confirm specs, colors, and current product details, while Brownells and MidwayUSA may have sale pricing, coupon codes, rewards, or free shipping offers that bring the final price down. It is worth checking more than one source before ordering.

Best Ruger 10/22 Upgrades to Start With

If you are not sure where to start, think about what you want to improve first. Most 10/22 owners should not upgrade everything at once. Start with the part that addresses your biggest complaint, then build from there.

Best first upgrade: trigger

Best accuracy upgrade: barrel

Best fit and handling upgrade: stock or chassis

Best reliability upgrade: extractor, firing pin, or bolt parts

Best range convenience upgrade: magazines, magazine releases, bolt controls, and charging handles

Best full-build planning step: use a 10/22 build checklist before buying parts

For most shooters, the trigger is the most noticeable place to start. After that, barrels, stocks, chassis systems, optics, and reliability parts can be added based on how you actually use the rifle.

Start With a Goal Before Buying Ruger 10/22 Upgrades

Before you buy a single part, decide what you want your rifle to become. That matters more than the brand name on the package.

Lightweight plinker or field rifle: focus on a better trigger, lighter barrel, and practical stock.

Accuracy-focused rimfire rifle: focus on trigger, barrel, stock fit, optic, and stable shooting support.

Tactical or chassis build: focus on ergonomics, adjustability, mounting options, and the correct chassis type.

10/22 Takedown build: focus on portability without giving up too much stability.

Ground-up custom build: plan the receiver, trigger, barrel, stock or chassis, bolt, optic, and magazines together.

One of the most common mistakes people make is buying parts in random order. A lightweight field gun does not need a heavy barrel, and a serious accuracy build will gain more from a trigger, barrel, and stable stock than from cosmetic parts.

Ruger 10/22 Trigger Upgrades

A trigger upgrade is usually the first Ruger 10/22 upgrade I recommend. The factory trigger works, but it is not especially crisp or refined. A cleaner trigger can make the rifle easier to shoot well without changing the rest of the build.

There are several good 10/22 trigger options, and they are not all aimed at the same buyer. Some are complete drop-in trigger assemblies. Others are internal upgrade kits for the factory housing. Some are best for casual plinking, while others are better suited to competition or precision-focused builds.

Original Ruger 10/22 trigger parts next to TandemKross Ultimate Trigger Kit parts.

TandemKross 10/22 Trigger Options

TandemKross is one of the first places I would look for a 10/22 trigger upgrade. Their 10/22 trigger parts are designed around better control, adjustability, and a more performance-focused feel than the factory trigger.

If you want to improve the factory trigger housing, the TandemKross Ultimate Trigger Kit for the Ruger 10/22 is a strong option. If you want a more complete setup, the TandemKross Manticore trigger assembly is worth a look.

Timney Calvin Elite Two Stage Trigger

The Timney Calvin Elite Two Stage deserves a strong mention because it is one of the most ergonomic 10/22 triggers available. The trigger shoe design, adjustability, and two-stage feel make it easy to set up around the shooter rather than forcing the shooter to adapt to the trigger.

Timney Calvin Elite Two Stage Trigger for the Ruger 10/22.

The standard Timney 10/22 trigger is a solid drop-in option, but the Calvin Elite Two Stage is the Timney trigger that stands out. If you want a complete trigger assembly with a more refined feel and better ergonomics, check current prices at MidwayUSA.

KIDD 10/22 Triggers

KIDD triggers are one of the strongest performance-focused options for the Ruger 10/22. They are well respected, especially among shooters building more serious accuracy rifles. Start with KIDD direct for the full trigger lineup, then check Brownells for KIDD parts in case coupons, sale pricing, or free shipping offers make the final price better.

Velocity 10/22 Trigger

Velocity is another trigger option worth considering, especially because I have hands-on experience with their 10/22 triggers. Read my Velocity Trigger Kit with Mag Release review, then visit Velocity direct if it looks like the right fit for your rifle.

Ruger BX Trigger

The Ruger BX Trigger is the simple factory drop-in option. It is a noticeable upgrade over the standard 10/22 trigger and makes sense for casual shooters who want an easy swap without getting into premium trigger pricing. It is not the most refined 10/22 trigger available, but it is a practical upgrade for the money.

Check current prices at Brownells and MidwayUSA.

Volquartsen, Power Custom, and Other Trigger Options

Volquartsen is a well-known name in the 10/22 world, and some shooters specifically want their trigger products. They are prominent enough to include, but I would not call them the best value. If you want to compare Volquartsen 10/22 triggers, check current prices at Brownells and MidwayUSA.

Power Custom is another option for shooters who want to improve the factory trigger housing rather than replace the entire assembly. I would treat those as parts-kit options rather than top recommendations for most readers, but they are worth checking if that is the upgrade path you prefer. Compare Power Custom 10/22 options at Brownells and MidwayUSA.

Ruger 10/22 Barrel Upgrades

A barrel upgrade makes the most sense when your goal is better accuracy, a lighter rifle, or a more specialized build. Factory Ruger 10/22 barrels can shoot well, but aftermarket barrels give you more choices in weight, profile, length, threading, sight options, and overall build direction.

Barrel upgrades are also where you can really change the character of the rifle. Lightweight barrels improve handling and make a field rifle easier to carry. Heavier barrels usually favor stability and consistency. Threaded barrels add suppressor flexibility.

WhistlePig / AccuLite 10/22 Barrels

WhistlePig, now AccuLite, is one of my favorite lightweight 10/22 barrel options. These barrels are a strong choice if you want to reduce weight without turning the rifle into a heavy bench gun. They are especially useful for lightweight field rifles, fast-handling builds, and rifles that still need good accuracy without a lot of extra barrel weight.

For current models and options, visit the AccuLite Ruger 10/22 barrel category.

TandemKross Spitfire 10/22 Barrel

The TandemKross Spitfire barrel is a very different kind of 10/22 barrel upgrade. It is designed around lightweight handling, direct accessory mounting, and a more competition/range-focused build. If you are building around TandemKross parts, it belongs high on the list.

The TandemKross Spitfire 10/22 Barrel weighs in.

Tactical Solutions 10/22 Takedown Barrel

Tactical Solutions is a strong option to include, especially for 10/22 Takedown owners. I would not frame their barrels as the premium pick overall, but their Takedown barrels deserve special attention because the included fiber optic sights make them one of the most complete 10/22 Takedown barrel upgrades.

Check current Tactical Solutions 10/22 options at Brownells and MidwayUSA.

Green Mountain Steel Barrels

Green Mountain is a respected barrel maker and a good option for shooters who want a traditional steel 10/22 barrel. They offer steel barrels in a variety of profiles, including heavier target-style barrels and more traditional sporter-style options. Since I have not reviewed one personally, I would present them as a well-regarded option rather than a firsthand recommendation.

Visit Green Mountain direct for current Ruger 10/22 barrel options.

KIDD, Feddersen, E.R. Shaw, Shilen, and Volquartsen Barrels

KIDD barrels are also a strong performance recommendation. Start with KIDD direct for the full barrel lineup, then check Brownells for KIDD parts before ordering.

If you prefer a traditional steel or match-style barrel, F.J. Feddersen, E.R. Shaw, and Shilen are also worth considering. Feddersen and Shilen lean more toward accuracy-focused builds, while E.R. Shaw can be a practical option for shooters who want a traditional steel target barrel without chasing the highest-priced options.

Check F.J. Feddersen 10/22 barrels at Brownells, E.R. Shaw direct, and Shilen options at Brownells and MidwayUSA.

Volquartsen also offers lightweight 10/22 barrel options, including carbon fiber and Takedown configurations. They are a well-known name in the rimfire market, and some shooters specifically want Volquartsen parts. I would include them as a prominent option, but not push them as the best value unless the reader already wants that brand. Check current prices at Brownells and MidwayUSA.

If accuracy is your main goal, keep in mind that ammo still matters. A factory barrel with quality match ammo can sometimes outshoot an aftermarket barrel fed bulk ammo. If your goal is better groups, test more than one load before assuming the barrel is the limiting factor.

Ruger 10/22 Stock and Chassis Upgrades

A stock or chassis upgrade can completely change how a 10/22 feels. It affects balance, ergonomics, how easy the rifle is to shoot from different positions, and whether the build feels like a traditional rifle, a target rifle, or a modern chassis setup.

This is also where personal preference starts to matter more. Some shooters want wood or laminate. Others want a lightweight polymer stock, a rigid precision setup, or an aluminum chassis with AR-style parts and modern accessory mounting.

Boyds Wood and Laminate Stocks

Boyds is the main option I would include for wood and laminate 10/22 stocks, especially if you want to choose the stock shape, laminate color, finish, and other custom options. Just plan on waiting two to three weeks before receiving it because Boyds builds those stocks to order.

If you need a stock faster, check the ready-made Boyds options at MidwayUSA. You will get fewer choices, but the stock is already built and should arrive sooner. For custom options, visit Boyds direct.

If you have a 10/22 Takedown, see my Boyds Pro Varmint Stock for the Ruger 10/22 Takedown article for a closer look.

Magpul X-22 Stocks

Magpul is one of the easiest stock upgrades to recommend for a standard 10/22. The MOE X-22 is lightweight, affordable, and practical, while the Hunter X-22 adds more adjustability. The Hunter X-22 Takedown is the better Magpul option if you have a 10/22 Takedown.

Read my Magpul MOE X-22 Stock article if you want a closer look.
KRG Bravo and Victor Company Titan22

The KRG Bravo and Victor Company Titan22 sit in the more serious polymer stock category. They are not basic replacement stocks. They are better suited to shooters who want more rigidity, more adjustability, and a more accuracy-focused build.

The KRG Bravo 10/22 Chassis is a strong option if you want a more precision-oriented 10/22 build with better ergonomics and modularity than a basic factory stock. Check current prices at Brownells and MidwayUSA.

The Victor Company Titan22 is known as a very rigid stock system, which makes it a strong option for target shooting and accuracy-focused builds. It is still practical for casual range use and plinking, but it also makes sense if you are building a more serious 10/22 accuracy rifle without moving into a full aluminum chassis. I have one, but have not published a full review yet. Check current prices at Brownells and MidwayUSA, or visit Victor Company to compare the full Titan22 lineup.

SB Tactical SB22

The SB Tactical SB22 is one of the better budget-friendly modular chassis options for the 10/22 platform. It works for standard 10/22, 10/22 Takedown, and Charger-style builds, with a lightweight polymer chassis, M-LOK mounting, AR-style grip compatibility, and an M1913 rear interface.

I would look at it as a compact, modular, pack-gun-style option rather than a dedicated benchrest chassis. Check current SB22 options at Brownells and MidwayUSA.

Luth-AR MCA-22

The Luth-AR MCA-22 is a strong option for lightweight 10/22 builds where speed, adjustability, and handling matter. It also works for a bench-style build because it accepts bull barrels and gives you plenty of adjustment, although it may not have the same rigidity as a heavier precision chassis.

I would look at it as a versatile, lightweight chassis rather than a dedicated benchrest option. Read my Luth-AR MCA-22 article, then check Brownells for current availability.

Hogue OverMolded Stocks

Hogue OverMolded stocks are a good fit if you want a comfortable, grippy replacement stock without turning the 10/22 into a chassis build. They are available for standard barrels, bull barrels, Takedown models, and other configurations, so they are worth checking if comfort and simple handling improvements matter more than modularity.

They are also very reasonably priced, which makes them one of the easier stock upgrades to justify. Check options at Brownells and MidwayUSA.

Adaptive Tactical, Fab Defense, ATI, and Archangel

Adaptive Tactical is worth including for shooters who want a feature-rich 10/22 stock, especially if onboard magazine storage matters. The big feature is the ability to store spare magazines in the buttstock, which can be handy for range use, plinking, or a compact grab-and-go setup. It also gives you an adjustable rear stock, pistol grip, accessory storage, and support for standard or bull barrels. I would treat it as a practical tactical-style polymer stock rather than a precision or benchrest chassis. Check current prices at Brownells and MidwayUSA.

Fab Defense also offers tactical-style 10/22 stock options for shooters who want an AR-style layout, folding-stock capability, or a more aggressive look. These are more about ergonomics, modularity, and styling than precision performance, but they are a better option than the lowest-tier tactical stocks if that style is what you want. Check current Fab Defense options at MidwayUSA.

ATI Strikeforce stocks are another tactical-style option for the 10/22, especially for shooters who want a collapsible-stock look or a more AR-inspired setup. Like several other tactical-style polymer stocks, these are more about appearance and features than building the most rigid or accuracy-focused rifle. Check current ATI Strikeforce options at MidwayUSA.

Archangel stocks from ProMag are another option if you specifically want a tactical-style 10/22 stock at a lower price point. Some shooters like the look and feature set, but I would treat these more as an aesthetics-driven option than a performance upgrade. If that style appeals to you, check current options at Brownells and MidwayUSA.

Midwest Industries Aluminum Chassis

Midwest Industries is the option I would include for shooters who want an aluminum, AR-style 10/22 chassis. It makes the rifle feel more modular and accessory-friendly, especially if the goal is a modern 10/22 build rather than a traditional sporter or wood-stock rifle.

Be careful to choose the correct model. Midwest offers fixed-barrel and Takedown chassis options, and they are not interchangeable. Check current prices at Brownells and MidwayUSA.

Grey Birch LaChassis

Grey Birch is another premium aluminum chassis option for the 10/22. I do not have firsthand experience with their chassis, but they have a strong following among shooters who want a modern, modular 10/22 build with features like folding-stock compatibility, M-LOK, and ARCA-style support.

If that style of build appeals to you, check current prices at Brownells and MidwayUSA, or visit Grey Birch to compare the full LaChassis lineup.

Crazy Ivan, PMACA, and Enoch Industries

Crazy Ivan is a respected 10/22 chassis option, and I have covered several of their products over the years. There is plenty of existing content for readers who want a deeper look, including my Crazy Ivan Takedown chassis articles and related builds. Start with my Crazy Ivan 10/22 Takedown chassis follow-up, then check Creekside Custom for the current Crazy Ivan chassis lineup.

PMACA is worth a look if you want a simple, affordable aluminum chassis for a 10/22 build. Their chassis are not as flashy as some of the higher-priced options, but the quality and value are excellent. If you want an aluminum chassis without spending more than necessary, PMACA is one of the better budget-friendly places to start. Read my PMACA Manufacturing article, then visit PMACA direct for current options.

Enoch Industries is another aluminum chassis option worth knowing about, especially for compact 10/22 and Charger-style builds. Their ODIN, Deep Six, and Arcane chassis systems have a strong following, though availability can be limited at times. Read my Enoch Industries Deep Six Chassis System article for a closer look, or visit Enoch Industries for current chassis options.

Samson B-TM and High Tower Armory 90/22

The Samson B-TM is one of the more interesting 10/22 stock options if you like the classic side-folding Mini-14 style. It is more about compact handling, nostalgia, and styling than building the lightest or most accurate rifle, but Samson’s quality is much better than the bargain-bin tactical stock options. It also has a certain 1980s TV-show vibe, though this setup should be capable of better accuracy than the rifles that inspired the look.

Check current B-TM options at Brownells, MidwayUSA, or Samson Manufacturing.

The High Tower Armory 90/22 is a bullpup conversion stock for the Ruger 10/22, which makes it more of a specialty build than a standard stock upgrade. It shortens the overall rifle layout, gives the 10/22 a very different feel, and has obvious appeal if you like compact bullpup-style rifles.

High Tower Armory specifies a minimum 18.0-inch barrel to maintain the required 26-inch overall rifle length, so confirm your barrel length before starting a build. Left-handed shooters should also review the manufacturer’s safety guidance carefully. Check current options at Brownells or High Tower Armory.

TandemKross Manticore X

The TandemKross Manticore X is different from a standard 10/22 stock or chassis. It is an all-in-one lower/chassis system with a built-in premium trigger, so you are not just dropping the rifle into a replacement stock. It also includes a lot of well-thought-out features for control, ergonomics, and setup flexibility.

The Manticore X can be paired with an optional handguard and configured with a stock or brace, depending on the build. For shooters who want a more complete 10/22 upgrade path instead of piecing together a stock, chassis, and trigger separately, the TandemKross Manticore X deserves a close look.

10/22 Bolt and Reliability Upgrades

Reliability upgrades are not as exciting as a trigger, barrel, or stock, but they can matter if your 10/22 sees a lot of use. Extractors, firing pins, springs, and complete bolts are best viewed as practical reliability parts rather than must-have upgrades for every casual rifle.

Extractor Upgrades

An upgraded extractor is one of those small reliability parts that makes sense to add when you are already ordering other 10/22 upgrades. It may not be worth placing a separate order just for an extractor unless your rifle is having extraction issues, but adding one to an existing parts order is a practical way to improve reliability without spending much more.

If your 10/22 sees a lot of range time, shoots mixed bulk ammo, or has started showing extraction problems, an extractor upgrade is worth considering. For TandemKross extractor-related parts and other 10/22 reliability add-ons, browse the TandemKross Ruger 10/22 category.

Firing Pins, Springs, and Small Bolt Parts

Firing pins, springs, and other small bolt parts are best treated as reliability add-ons. They may not be exciting upgrades by themselves, but they can be useful if your 10/22 is showing light strikes or if you want spare wear parts on hand. Like extractors, these are often easiest to justify when you are already placing an order for other 10/22 upgrades.

Complete 10/22 Bolt Upgrades

A complete bolt upgrade is a bigger step than replacing an extractor, but it can make sense for higher-round-count rifles, suppressed builds, competition-style setups, or custom 10/22 projects. A quality aftermarket bolt can improve cycling feel, consistency, and reliability, especially when paired with a good extractor and firing pin.

If your factory bolt works fine, I would usually start with a trigger, barrel, or stock first. If you are building a more complete rifle, read my aftermarket 10/22 bolt upgrade guide before choosing one.

Magazines and Range Convenience Upgrades

Ruger-branded magazines are still the safest bet for 10/22 reliability, and every 10/22 owner should have plenty of spares. If you shoot often, the BX-1, BX-15, and BX-25 magazines are worth keeping on hand.

Buying a three-pack or adding extra magazines to an order you are already placing usually makes more sense than paying shipping on a single magazine by itself. Check current Ruger magazine options at Brownells and MidwayUSA.

Magazine Couplers

Magazine couplers do not make a 10/22 more accurate, but they can make range time more convenient. They are useful if you prefer the reliability and compact size of factory 10-round rotary magazines but want more loaded rounds immediately available.

Options like the TandemKross Assembled DoubleKross Magazine, High Tower Armory coupler, and Alangator DuoMag or TriMag all solve that problem in slightly different ways. This is a small upgrade category, so I would treat it as a range-convenience add-on rather than a major 10/22 upgrade.

For more detail, see my High Tower Armory 10/22 magazine coupler article and my Alangator DuoMag 10/22 magazine coupler article.

Magazine Releases, Bolt Controls, and Charging Handles

Small control upgrades can make a 10/22 easier to use at the range. Extended magazine releases, improved bolt controls, charging handles, and upgraded safeties do not affect accuracy, but they can make reloads, clearing, and general handling more convenient. These parts are especially useful if you shoot a lot, compete, or want a rifle that is easier to run quickly.

If you are already ordering 10/22 parts, this is a good category to browse before checking out. A small control upgrade may not justify a separate order by itself, but it can be a practical add-on when you are buying a trigger, extractor, firing pin, or other upgrade parts. Browse the TandemKross Ruger 10/22 category for control and convenience parts.

Scopes, Red Dots, and Optic Mounts

Optics are another common 10/22 upgrade, especially if you want to shoot smaller targets or stretch .22 LR past casual plinking distances. A lightweight rimfire scope is usually the better choice for precision and target work, while a red dot or green dot makes sense for fast shooting and close-range range use.

If your goal is smaller groups, longer rimfire distances, or bench shooting, start with a scope. If your goal is speed, plinking, steel targets, or a lightweight rifle, a red dot or green dot may be the better fit.

Before buying an optic, make sure your 10/22 has the right rail, rings, or mount. A good optic will not do much for you if the mounting setup is loose, too high, or poorly matched to the way you actually shoot. I have reviewed a lot of scopes, red dots, and green dots, so I will keep this section focused on the most relevant rimfire-friendly options rather than turning this guide into a full optics roundup.

Bipods, Bags, and Shooting Support

A bipod, shooting bag, or stable rest will not make the rifle itself more accurate, but it can help you shoot it better. If you are testing ammo, zeroing an optic, or trying to see what a new barrel or trigger actually changed, a stable shooting setup matters.

For prone or field-style shooting, a bipod makes sense. For bench work, bags or a rest may be the better choice. I cover that in more detail in my rimfire bipod guide.

Cleaning, Maintenance, and Ammo Testing

Before replacing parts, make sure the rifle is clean, properly lubricated, and tested with more than one type of .22 LR ammunition. Some accuracy or reliability complaints come from ammo, magazines, fouling, or basic maintenance rather than a part that needs to be upgraded.

Cleaning and maintenance products matter, but they are not the main focus of this Ruger 10/22 upgrades guide. I have cleaning content already and more pending, so deeper cleaning recommendations are better handled in dedicated articles.

What About 10/22 Receivers?

Receivers are worth discussing, but they deserve their own guide. If you are upgrading an existing Ruger 10/22, I would usually start with the trigger, barrel, stock, bolt, magazines, and optics before replacing the receiver.

If you are building a rifle from parts, the receiver becomes much more important, and I will cover 10/22 receiver options in a separate guide.

Best Ruger 10/22 Upgrade Order

The best 10/22 upgrade order depends on what you want the rifle to do. For most shooters, I would start with the trigger because it gives the most noticeable improvement right away. From there, look at a barrel if accuracy or weight is the goal, then choose a stock or chassis that fits the way you actually shoot.

Optics, magazines, and small reliability parts can come next. A complete bolt or receiver makes more sense once you are building a more serious custom rifle rather than simply improving a factory 10/22.

Trigger: best first upgrade for most shooters.

Barrel: best next step if accuracy or weight is the goal.

Stock or chassis: best for fit, handling, support, and build direction.

Optic and mount: important for precision, speed, or longer rimfire distances.

Ruger-branded magazines: best reliability baseline and worth having in quantity.

Extractor, firing pin, and reliability parts: smart add-ons, especially when already ordering parts.

Bolt upgrade: useful for higher-end or higher-round-count builds.

Receiver: save for a ground-up custom build or a future receiver-specific guide.

If you are planning a full rifle instead of one upgrade at a time, use my 10/22 build checklist and custom 10/22 build articles before buying parts.

Frequently Asked Questions About Ruger 10/22 Upgrades

What is the best first upgrade for a Ruger 10/22?

For most shooters, the best first upgrade is the trigger. It is usually the most noticeable improvement in control, consistency, and overall shootability.

What Ruger 10/22 upgrades help accuracy the most?

The biggest accuracy-related Ruger 10/22 upgrades are usually the trigger and barrel. Ammo selection still matters, but those are the two hardware upgrades most likely to make a real difference.

Do stock and chassis upgrades improve accuracy?

A stock or chassis does not automatically make a rifle more accurate, but it can help the shooter use the rifle better. A more stable stock, better fit, improved ergonomics, and better support can make it easier to shoot the rifle consistently.

Are bolt and extractor upgrades worth it?

They can be. Bolt and extractor upgrades are practical Ruger 10/22 upgrades for reliability, smoother function, and long-term use. They matter most on higher-round-count rifles, suppressed builds, custom rifles, or rifles that already show extraction or cycling problems.

Should I upgrade my Ruger 10/22 or build a custom one?

That depends on how far you plan to go. If you are replacing the trigger, barrel, stock, bolt, and optic, you are getting close to custom-build territory anyway. At that point, it makes sense to plan the whole rifle instead of buying parts at random.

Are Ruger 10/22 magazines worth upgrading?

For reliability, Ruger-branded magazines are still the safest place to start. Every 10/22 owner should have several spare magazines, and buying multipacks or adding magazines to a larger order usually makes more sense than paying shipping on one magazine at a time.

Final Thoughts on the Best Ruger 10/22 Upgrades

The Ruger 10/22 has one of the strongest aftermarket ecosystems in the rimfire world. That is good news, but it can also make it easy to overspend on parts that do not match your actual goals.

If you want the most noticeable improvement, start with the trigger. If you want better accuracy or a lighter rifle, look at barrels. If you want better fit, handling, or a different build style, choose the right stock or chassis. From there, add magazines, reliability parts, optics, and support gear based on how you use the rifle.

The best Ruger 10/22 upgrades are not the same for every shooter. Start with the problem you want to solve, choose quality parts, and build the rifle around how you actually shoot.
The post Best Ruger 10/22 Upgrades appeared first on Industry Outsider.

Saiga 12 Review: Platform Overview

This Saiga 12 review explains conversion options, gas tuning, reliability, magazine performance, and whether this platform is worth owning today.

The Saiga 12 is a famous AK-style 12 gauge shotgun made in Russia by Izhmash (now Kalashnikov Concern). It combines a long-stroke AK gas system with detachable magazines and drum options. Over the years, it has earned a reputation for durability, customization, and fun. However, import limits have made prices rise on the secondary market.

Saiga 12 shotgun made in Russia.

A Brief History of the Saiga 12

The Saiga 12 was introduced in the 1990s as a civilian sporting shotgun based on the AK design. Unlike traditional semi-auto shotguns of the time, it uses detachable box magazines. Drums are also available, though some may find their loaded weight to be a bit much. Of course, the obvious solution to shed that weight is a mag dump, which is extremely fun with a well-tuned Saiga 12.

There are plenty of mag-fed shotguns available now, but this feature made it popular in 3 Gun competitions and recreational shooting. Early adopters appreciated faster reloads and the AK-style controls. Eventually, politics intervened, and import restrictions stopped new shipments, which increased prices and limited availability in the U.S.

Saiga 12 Review: Conversion from Sporter to AK Configuration

Most Saiga 12 shotguns arrived in a “sporter” style. They included a rearward trigger, rifle-style stock, and no pistol grip. While functional, many owners preferred converting them for better ergonomics.

Saiga 12 Review: What Is a Conversion?

A typical Saiga 12 conversion involves moving the trigger forward, installing a pistol grip, upgrading the trigger guard, and adding U.S.-made compliance parts. A minimum number of American-made parts was required as part of the conversion. Politicians determined that this would make us all safer. In the interest of fairness, the American-made triggers were not only better, but safer. And swapping out the two-position gas system for a six-position unit had benefits as well.

A muzzle brake and pistol grip each counted towards the compliance parts. U.S.-made magazines were gold, as the body, follower, and spring each counted separately towards compliance. Yes, a larger magazine became a compliance part. Go figure. Some owners also install a stock adapter for AR-style buffer tubes like the “pig nose” shown below. After conversion, the shotgun handles more naturally, especially for shooters used to AK platforms. An adjustable stock is also almost always a plus.

Saiga 12 Review: Gas Tuning and Reliability

No complete Saiga 12 review is complete without discussing the gas system. As mentioned, the Saiga 12 uses an AK-style long-stroke piston system. That design is durable, but it requires proper gas regulation to run consistently.

From the factory, most Saiga 12 shotguns include a two-position gas regulator. One setting is intended for lighter loads, while the other is designed for heavier ammunition. In theory, this covers most use cases. In practice, however, 12 gauge ammunition varies widely in pressure and burn characteristics.

Because of that variation, many shooters upgrade to a multi-position adjustable gas regulator. Aftermarket regulators often provide four to six settings. (Mine has six). This allows more precise control over how much gas cycles the action.

Mechanically, the goal is simple. The shotgun needs enough gas to cycle the bolt fully, but not so much that it slams the action unnecessarily hard. If the system is under-gassed, you may see failures to eject or feed. If it is over-gassed, recoil increases and internal components experience more wear over time.

When tuned correctly, the Saiga 12’s gas system is robust and reliable. However, it does require more user input than many modern out of the box sem-auto shotguns.

Saiga 12 Review: Why Gas Tuning Matters

Gas tuning matters because the Saiga 12 is not a one-load platform. Light bulk birdshot, standard buckshot, and heavy slugs all generate different levels of pressure. Therefore, a single fixed setting rarely delivers optimal performance across all ammunition types.

For example, inexpensive bulk birdshot often runs best on a more open gas setting. On the other hand, hotter defensive or heavy loads typically require a more restricted setting to prevent excessive bolt velocity.

Proper adjustment directly affects reliability. A correctly tuned shotgun will cycle consistently and maintain smoother recoil characteristics. As a result, both competition shooters and recreational users benefit from taking the time to dial it in.

In many cases, reports of unreliability stem from improper gas settings rather than design flaws. Once adjusted correctly – and paired with quality magazines – the platform performs far more consistently than its reputation sometimes suggests.

Six-position gas adjustment on a Saiga 12.

Saiga 12 Review: Magazines and Drum Options

The Saiga 12 uses detachable magazines. Options include 5, 8, 10, and 12-round magazines, plus 20-round drums. Drums give more capacity but add weight. Quality magazines are essential for reliability, especially during rapid fire.

12-round magazine loaded with 12-gauge shells.

Saiga 12 Review: 3 Gun and Defensive Use

The Saiga 12 became popular in 3 Gun because magazine reloads are faster than tube-fed shotguns. While newer platforms exist, a tuned Saiga 12 is still competitive. Also, some shooters consider it for defense due to semi-auto operation and magazine capacity. However, weight and ammo cost must be considered.

Saiga 12 at the Range

When I take my Saiga 12 to the range, it never fails to turn heads. So if you want one, be prepared to answer questions. After tuning, it’s been very reliable. Recoil is no better or worse than my Beretta 1301 for most loads, thanks to the adjustable gas system. I don’t feel too beat up after a box or two. With 12 rounds available, it absolutely shreds pumpkins and watermelons. Reloads can be quick with practice, once you understand the “rock and lock” process.

Saiga 12: Prices. Is It Worth It?

Since imports stopped, Saiga 12 shotguns are mostly used-market. Unconverted sporters start around $800, while converted examples cost more. Conversion parts may add several hundred dollars. Unless you are buying from a reliable source, it may be better to start with a sporter, and either convert it yourself, or pay someone. A bad conversion with low-quality parts is never a bargain.

So, is the Saiga 12 worth it? If you want a magazine-fed AK-style 12 gauge with customization, a tunable gas system, and unique features, yes. For a simple out-of-the-box defensive shotgun, other options may be better. MidwayUSA offers some Saiga 12 parts and accessories.

Saiga 12 Review: Final Thoughts

The Saiga 12 is not perfect. It requires understanding the gas system, magazines, and sometimes conversion work. However, when set up correctly, it offers strong reliability, modularity, fast reloads, and fun on the range. Therefore, for the right shooter, it is a unique and rewarding platform.

Saiga 12 Review FAQ

Is the Saiga 12 reliable?

Yes, if tuned properly. Most reliability issues stem from poor gas settings or low-quality magazines.

How much is a Saiga 12 worth?

Unconverted sporters start around $800. Converted examples cost more depending on parts and configuration. Locally, I see them around $1,300 or so.

Is a Saiga 12 conversion worth it?

Yes. Moving the trigger and adding a pistol grip improves ergonomics and AK-style handling.
The post Saiga 12 Review: Conversion, Gas Tuning & Value appeared first on Industry Outsider.

A bulletproof backpack is no longer just for military or law enforcement. Today, civilians are seeking practical ways to add ballistic protection to their daily carry without drawing attention. Bulletproof backpacks combine storage, comfort, and armor into one discreet package.

Bodyguard focuses on armored backpacks for civilian use, travel, and emergency preparedness. Instead of emphasizing tactical looks, these backpacks prioritize usability, concealment, and modular protection. Below is a detailed look at Bodyguard’s bulletproof backpack lineup, sorted by starting price and intended use.

What Is a Bulletproof Backpack?

A bulletproof backpack is a standard backpack with ballistic armor panels or plates. Most civilian models use Level 3A soft armor, rated to stop common handgun threats. Some backpacks also accept rifle-rated hard plates for extra protection.

Unlike traditional body armor, a ballistic backpack can be worn comfortably throughout the day. It provides passive protection while commuting, traveling, or attending public events. When needed, users can position the pack between themselves and a threat for added safety.

Understanding Armor Coverage: Level IIIA vs Level III+

Most civilian bulletproof backpacks use Level IIIA (often listed as 3A) soft armor. This armor stops common handgun rounds such as 9mm, .40 S&W, and .44 Magnum. It is lightweight, flexible, and comfortable enough for daily carry, but it will not stop rifle rounds.

Backpacks that accept Level III+ hard plates provide protection against many rifle rounds, including 5.56 NATO and 7.62×39. These plates are heavier and less flexible, so they are typically used when maximum protection is needed. In backpacks designed for front and rear deployment, III+ plates can offer nearly full ballistic coverage.

Many Bodyguard backpacks allow users to combine soft and hard armor. This gives the flexibility to prioritize comfort for everyday use or maximum protection in higher-risk situations. The price range for each of the backpacks below is based on the level of coverage. All three have the same options for protection.

<img decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-30863" src="https://industryoutsider.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/First-Responder-Bulletproof-Backpack-Only-21.webp" alt="Bodyguard First Responder bulletproof backpack.

Bodyguard First Responder Bulletproof Backpack Plate Carrier

The Bodyguard First Responder Bulletproof Backpack is the most specialized option. It focuses on rapid deployment and organized gear access rather than daily carry aesthetics.

This backpack doubles as a plate carrier system, making it ideal for emergency preparedness, medical kits, or vehicle-staged gear.

Rapid-deploy belt system for quick donning

40-liter capacity with structured internal organization

Bodyguard First Responder bulletproof backpack.

Choosing the Right Bodyguard Bulletproof Backpack

All Bodyguard backpacks share a core concept: discreet ballistic protection combined with functional storage. Each model supports standard armor plates and offers protection against slashing and stabbing threats.

The main differences are size, deployment speed, and intended use:

Switchblade: Best overall value and versatility

Elite: Best for discreet everyday carry

First Responder: Best for emergency preparedness and response

The video below demonstrates how the backpacks are deployed. It also breaks down the differences between them very well. For daily carry with minimal attention, the Elite or Switchblade are ideal. For preparedness-focused users, the First Responder provides faster access and organized gear.

Final Thoughts

Bulletproof backpacks are gaining popularity as civilians seek low-profile safety solutions. Bodyguard’s lineup covers a wide range of use cases – from discreet commuting to dedicated emergency response.

By understanding each backpack’s design and purpose, you can choose the right model for your needs. Whether you value discretion, capacity, or rapid deployment, Bodyguard offers a practical solution that integrates ballistic protection into everyday life.

Bulletproof Backpacks FAQs

Are bulletproof backpacks legal to own?

Yes. Bulletproof backpacks are legal in all 50 U.S. states. Civilian body armor, including ballistic backpacks, is legal for personal use. Some local restrictions may apply, but most people can own them without issue.

What level of protection do bulletproof backpacks offer?

Most civilian backpacks use Level 3A soft armor, which stops common handguns such as 9mm, .40 S&W, and .44 Magnum. Many backpacks also accept rifle-rated plates for added protection.

What is the difference between a bulletproof backpack and an armored backpack?

There is no functional difference. Terms like “bulletproof,” “armored,” and “ballistic backpack” are interchangeable. All refer to backpacks designed to hold ballistic panels or plates.

Can a bulletproof backpack stop rifle rounds?

Level 3A soft armor does not stop rifle rounds. However, many models accept hard armor plates rated for rifles. Protection depends on the installed armor.

Are bulletproof backpacks heavy?

Weight varies with armor type and backpack size. Level 3A backpacks are manageable for daily carry. Adding rifle plates increases both weight and protection.

Can you use a bulletproof backpack for everyday carry?

Yes. Many backpacks are designed for daily use. Discreet models blend into normal environments while providing passive protection.

Do bulletproof backpacks protect both the front and back?

Some backpacks only protect the back. Others provide both front and rear coverage using deployment systems or additional panels. Protection varies by model.

Who should consider a bulletproof backpack?

These backpacks appeal to civilians prioritizing safety – commuters, travelers, parents, and emergency-preparedness enthusiasts. They offer extra protection without the bulk of traditional body armor.

One weekend, you’re admiring the craftsmanship of a classic Colt revolver. The next, you’re burning through ammo at the local range. Many firearms enthusiasts find themselves straddling two worlds: gun collecting for their rarity or history, while also enjoying them as tools for recreation. Which brings more satisfaction: shooting at the range or collecting firearms for their value? And do you even need to choose?

Defining the Dual Role: Shooter vs. Collector

I’ve always thought of a “shooter” as the gun that comes with me to the range without hesitation. It’s the one that gets holster wear, the one that burns through boxes of ammo, and the one I’ll hand to a buddy who wants to try it out. Those guns earn their keep by being used, maybe even abused, then used some more.

A collector’s piece feels different. That might be a custom pistol, a vintage revolver, or something with historical value. You handle it carefully and think twice before putting rounds through it. The satisfaction comes from knowing you’re preserving something special.

A Collection of Stainless S&W Revolvers.

Gun Collecting Costs and Firearm Investment Risks

Whether you lean toward shooting or collecting, owning guns always comes with expenses. Shooters factor in ammo, eye/ear pro, accessories, range fees, and maybe some wear that comes from heavy use. Collectors face a different set of numbers, like market fluctuations, appraisal fees, safe storage, and even insurance for high-value pieces. Both sides require planning, but the stakes feel different depending on whether you see a firearm as a tool or as an investment.

I’ve kept receipts, logged serial numbers, and even noted round counts with some of my “collectibles”. It’s the kind of record-keeping that makes sense when a gun’s value might rise in the future. Still, money and passion don’t always align. I’ve known enthusiasts who had to pawn a gun just to cover short-term needs. That reality shows how fast firearms can shift from being weekend companions to financial assets with real weight behind them.

The Joy of Shooting: Why Firearms Are More Than Assets

No matter how much a gun is worth on paper, none of that matters unless you actually use it. I’ve been fortunate enough to experience some firearms that many folks would rather leave untouched, and that made me appreciate them even more. The sound, the recoil, and the way a firearm settles back on target tell you things that specs on a sheet never will.

Even friends who are serious about gun collecting admit it’s hard to keep everything locked away forever. Shooting connects you to the mechanics, the design, and the history behind each piece. A safe queen might look good in the cabinet, but range time adds a story you can’t buy. One of my FFL friends has dozens of collectibles, none of which are unfired. He’ll take a potential hit on value for the joy of actually shooting it.

For me, that’s the heart of the hobby. Shooting is a reminder that firearms aren’t just artifacts. They’re meant to be handled, tested, and experienced in ways that add depth to both collecting and ownership.

A Collection of CZ 75 Pistols Including Nickel and Stainless Models.

Finding the Balance: When Hobby and Investment Overlap

Every so often, the two roles overlap in surprising ways. I’ve bought a few handguns, mostly revolvers, that have risen in value over the years. On the other hand, I’ve watched collectors bring out a rare piece for a few deliberate shots, adding personal history to its legacy. My nickel CZ 75 B is an example. While not a common pistol, it still gets shot a few times a year.

These moments don’t replace the distinction between shooters and collectors. Instead, they show that the categories can shift over time. The S&W Highway Patrol .357 was a sub-$100 workhorse revolver when new. Now they command at least $600 for a used one, and top out well over $1,000 in excellent condition. But even the most pristine copy might still deserve a careful trip to the range. They’re a joy to shoot.

That flexibility is what makes the hobby fascinating. Firearms evolve in meaning depending on how you treat them, and sometimes the line between investment and enjoyment disappears altogether.

S&W Highway Patrol .357 Revolver.

Conclusion: Gun Collecting and Shooting Firearms Together

So, which brings more satisfaction—shooting or collecting? The answer is simple: both, in their own ways. For me, collecting and shooting aren’t rivals. One preserves history, the other creates memories. A firearm can be both an asset and a tool, depending on how you choose to use it. The real win is knowing which role each firearm plays in your life and enjoying it for exactly that reason.
The post Gun Collecting as a Hobby or Investment? appeared first on Industry Outsider.

The post VACA Jerky – it’s Crispified appeared first on Industry Outsider.

One of my outdoor industry friends recently turned me on to VACA Jerky – the Crispified Beef Jerky. He knows I like to spend a lot of time outdoors, and that I’m a bit of a jerky snob. While you don’t have to be an avid outdoors enthusiast or a jerky snob to appreciate VACA Jerky, if you fit that profile, you certainly won’t be disappointed in their products. For a tasty, high-protein snack on the go, it’s a winner.

VACA (Spanish for cow) takes an approach that I can certainly appreciate with their “Crispified Jerky”. By double dehydrating it, they’ve not only made it crispy and easier to eat, but also turned the flavor up a few notches. I once made a batch at home and left it in the dehydrator too long, which made it crispy. Though the texture was good, it couldn’t match the massive flavor of VACA. So of course I’m sharing my experience here.

The VACA Jerky Process

VACA starts with nicely marbled beef, slices it thin, flavors it, and then dehydrates it for longer than conventional jerky. Rather than go with the leanest cuts, they use that fat to help deliver the intense flavors. And if you like jerky, but don’t like the kind you have to tear apart with your teeth, you’re in for a real treat. VACA Crispified Beef Jerky has a texture closer to crispy bacon than traditional jerky.

VACA offers their jerky in three flavors. They have Classic, Mild, and Spicy options. You can choose from traditional smoky flavoring, smoky with a little bite, and smoky with some heat. My personal favorite is almost always going to be the spiciest version, but the other two pack a lot of flavor as well. Here’s a breakdown of the flavors. I shared at work and home, and took notes, so while the words are mine, they’re based on input from several jerky enthusiasts.

Classic VACA Jerky

This is the choice for anyone wanting a classic smoky flavor, without any heat. Thanks to the crunchy texture, it’s easy to eat – no tearing, no chewing for days. And the flavor comes on strong from the first bite. There is some greasiness to it, but that’s just the marbled fat, which helps deliver the flavor. It doesn’t come across as overly fatty. While no one found it objectionable, a few commented that it could use a little heat. And I tend to agree. It was good, but would not be my first choice.

Classic flavor VACA Crispified Beef Jerky.

Mild VACA Jerky

Possibly the best all-round version of VACA Jerky, this one benefits from the addition of some red chili pepper. Providing just a touch of heat to go with the smokiness, it improves the overall experience. Still as crunchy as the Mild, with a light sheen from the fat. You’re going to want to lick your fingers, no way around that. More than one of us observed that the added flavoring wasn’t evenly distributed. Which may have to do with the fat marbling. If a piece had less fat content, the heat may have been milder than in a more marbled piece. The solution was to eat bigger pieces.

Mild flavor VACA Crispified Beef Jerky.

Spicy VACA Jerky

Sticking with an ingredients list similar to the Mild version, Spicy gets more red pepper. You can see it on the surface, and it has more heat. I liked this flavor the most, but some people weren’t fans. The heat took a few moments to build, and at least one person mentioned it was nice until they got a few bites in. It went from smoky to spicy as they hit that red pepper.

I think that they were just expecting a milder heat. Chalk it up to trying to share a two-ounce package with several people – the inconsistent distribution of red pepper wouldn’t be an issue if you ate the package yourself, or shared it with one other person. For anyone who prefers very hot and spicy, this is probably more of a teaser. It’s balanced toward flavored heat, not just heat for the sake of being spicy.

Spicy flavor VACA Crispified Beef Jerky.

Ingredients List and Nutritional Information

All three flavors start with marbled beef combined with Liquid Smoke and Tamari Soy Sauce, and some brown sugar. The Mild includes the red pepper-based chili sauce, along with sugar, garlic, and salt. Spicy seems to be the same as Mild, but with more of the chili sauce to bring that extra heat.

Each two-ounce package is a single serving. Classic and Mild are 200 calories each, while Spicy is 210. Total fat for the first two is 2 grams, while Spicy has 2.5 grams. Classic has the least amount of carbs at 11 grams, with Mild and Spicy both serving up an extra gram, at 12 per serving. Protein follows that pattern a bit, with 35 grams for Classic and Mild, but only 34 for Spicy. If you’re eating jerky, you’re probably not worried about sodium, but it’s 800mg, 910mg, and 900mg, respectively.

Overall thoughts

There are plenty of times when I’ll pack a protein bar as a snack while out and about. They’re cheap and convenient, and reasonably satisfying. But they’re never incredibly flavorful. On the other hand, VACA Jerky hits the spot and is packed with flavor. At $10.99 for a two-ounce package, it’s unlikely to be my everyday snacking choice. But as an occasional treat, it’s going to find a place in my range bag and snack rotation. Check it out at vacajerky.com.

As always, I’d like to thank the folks at VACA Jerky for providing some snacking samples. They’ve got a unique product, and I appreciate the opportunity to share it with my readers.
The post VACA Jerky – it’s Crispified appeared first on Industry Outsider.

I’ve recently added the Otis Ripcord and their Universal Pistol cleaning kit to my range bag. I’m the guy who lets all his friends (and strangers) at the range try out his firearms. I’ve almost always got something new and different, and everyone wants to give it a go. The result is high round counts, usually from dirty ammo. So having a really compact kit for quick cleanings is important. Especially with the amount of suppressed shooting we do. While we like the quiet, everything gets dirtier faster.

<img decoding="async" class="wp-image-30206 size-full" src="https://industryoutsider.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/MG_0098.webp" alt="Otis Universal Pistol Cleaning Kit comes with a manual and a sticker.

My solution was to combine a couple of Otis Ripcords (.22 and 9mm) with their Universal Pistol cleaning kit. This gives me everything I need for some quick maintenance in the field, and it takes up very little space in my range bag. It’s also everything I need for a thorough cleaning at home, but I prefer having a dedicated kit for portability. Here’s a breakdown of the Ripcords and the cleaning kit.

Otis Ripcord

The Otis Ripcord is a bit like a bore snake, but with a few extra tricks up its sleeve. Each end has a brass section with 8-32 internal threads for various Otis cleaning components. The entire 36″ length is made of braided Nomex® with a rigid, helical core. That makes it heat-resistant, while also allowing the 10 inches of aggressive cleaning surface to engage the bore for quick results. Those brass ends also fit the included handle for easy pull-through from breech to muzzle.

.22 Otis Ripcord & Universal Pistol Cleaning Kit Components in use.

Because the Otis Ripcord is a bit more rigid than a bore snake, you don’t have to rely on gravity. Just push it through, snap it into the handle, and pull it the rest of the way. You can run it by itself for a quick clean, or use brushes and patches for a deeper clean. The Nomex® works like both a brush and patch to loosen and capture fouling in your barrel. Nothing could be easier, and it’s a definite time-saver.

Otis Universal Pistol Cleaning Kit

I paired the Otis Ripcords with their Universal Pistol cleaning kit. It covers .22, 9mm, .40, and .45 calibers. Since most of my shooting is either .22 or 9mm, it’s ideal for me. Inside this little round pouch is a comprehensive set of components for such a compact size. There are 8″ and 10″ aircraft-grade coated cables with a snap-on T-handle for good grip, like the Ripcord. Four bronze brushes cover the listed calibers. A small rod section, small and large slotted tips, 2″ and 3″ patches (10 each) an obstruction remover, chamber flag, and some Shooter’s Choice FP-10 CLP round out the kit.

Otis Universal Pistol Cleaning Kit with CZ Shadow 2 for scale.

Otis left some extra room in this 4″x4″x2.5″ pouch for additional accessories. So my two Otis Ripcords fit in as well. On the package, Otis also points out that the patches can be used up to 8 times each. I’ll probably find some small ziploc-style baggies to keep them separated for that reason. And I’ve got a compact wire brush to throw in, then I’m all set for range days.

Mixing and Matching the Otis Ripcord with the Cleaning Kit Components

Although I plan on using this at the range, I had to test it at home first. So I grabbed a pistol in each caliber and tried them both out. Ruger’s Mark IV is one of my favorite rimfire pistol platforms, and the one everyone wants to shoot. Here’s my TacSol Pac-Lite upper getting a little touch-up between range sessions. Rack the bolt, remove the upper and bolt, and the Otis Ripcord makes quick work of cleaning the barrel. A few passes with the bronze brush, and another with a patch soaked in a little CLP, and it’s ready to go.

Otis Universal Pistol Cleaning Kit Components in use.

Next up was my CZ Shadow 2. I bought this pre-Covid, when 9mm ammo was cheap. It wasn’t unusual to shoot hundreds of rounds in a single session. By the looks of it, it’s seen several hundred rounds of cheap and dirty range ammo since its last cleaning. So I ran the Otis Ripcord through it with a bronze brush a few times. Turns out the barrel wasn’t too bad, but the Urban Grey finish gets filthy really fast. So my bore is nice and shiny, but the pistol exterior needs a little extra attention.

9mm Otis Ripcord & Universal Pistol Cleaning Kit Components in use.

Pricing

The Otis Ripcord makes a great addition to any range bag. They are available in calibers from .17 to .50 and 12 gauge, and I counted 28 different options. Pricing starts at $15.99, and there are multi-caliber packs as well as bundles that include additional cleaning supplies. My favorites are the kits with the bronze brush, bore mop, microfiber cloth, CLP, and even a little brush that locks into the T-handle. Everything you need for an impromptu cleaning. They’ll all fit into a snack-size baggy, making it perfect for a hard or soft pistol case too.

The Universal Pistol cleaning kit retails for $46.19, and is just one of nearly 80 different kits that Otis offers. Prices start at $24.19 for the most basic kit, and go all the way up to $734.99 for their “Universal Range Box”. That kit is designed for larger groups of shooters, and is very comprehensive.

Additional info

I started shooting in the 80s, and by the early 90s, had a few firearms in my collection. Since then, I can’t recall a time when I didn’t have some Otis products in the plastic box I keep my cleaning supplies in. Now I have a mechanic’s rolling toolbox as my work/maintenance station. And it still has plenty of the basic Otis cleaning products. So when they offered me the opportunity to try out the Ripcords and consolidate my range cleaning kit into a compact pouch, I jumped at the opportunity. The Otis Ripcords are a game-changer, and a great match to the rest of their stuff. Check them all out at OtisTec.com.

As always, I’d like to thank Otis Technology for providing their products for my testing and evaluation.

A frequent question I see on firearm enthusiast sites is “how to mount a scope?”. That’s a very loaded question, as there are plenty of opinions on how to mount a scope correctly. I’m sharing the procedure I use, which has worked for rimfire rifles with high-magnification scopes. Along the way, I’ll offer some alternatives, and wrap it up with resources for tools and scope rings.

How To Mount A Scope

Scope mounting is done in several steps, and I’m skipping the scope and ring selection steps. Choosing a scope and rings or mount should already have been done, as those are a topic for another day. Ideally, you want the lowest rings possible to keep your scope off the rifle, but aligned with your eye when you have a proper cheek weld on your stock. From there, the first step is to mount the rings or one-piece mount. After that, position and level the scope. Then carefully torque your rings (or mount). The final step is to zero the scope.

Tools Suggested

Start with quality tools. Cheap bits in your driver will fit sloppy and can strip the screw heads. A quality bit set isn’t too expensive and will include hollow ground bits for other gunsmith work. A torque wrench is always recommended for driving those bits. I use the Wheeler F.A.T. (Firearm Accurizing Torque) wrench. Torque specs for optics are in inch-pounds, which is a surprisingly small amount. Overtightening will easily ruin optics. Do not use thread-lock on your rings either. That will cause the actual torque to be higher, and it’s not necessary.

Levels or a plumb are tools for making sure your reticle is level. If it’s not, adjusting windage and elevation will be difficult, since your changes will be diagonal, rather than horizontal or vertical. Zeroing a scope can be done several ways, and I have found the magnetic laser to be the quickest and easiest way. The Wheeler Professional Laser Bore Sighter is available in red or green. They’re available from a wide variety of retailers, and I bought both of mine used from private parties for well under MSRP. They’re a good investment.

Mounting Scope Rings

If you have a one-piece base, you don’t have any options here, you just torque down your base to the recommended specs. Rings give you more flexibility, as they can be moved fore and aft on your rail. Generally, you want them as far apart as possible on the scope body. Avoid getting too close to the objective (front) where the scope body widens. Likewise, make sure you have room around the turrets and magnification ring or ocular (rear) lens. You’ll want some room for adjusting the scope forward and back for proper eye relief.

How to Mount a Scope – Ring Placement.

Once the ring locations are determined, tighten them down. When I first learned how to mount a scope (for centerfire), I always pushed the rings forward against the rail. For rimfire applications where recoil is not an issue, this isn’t necessary. If the rings have a single cross-bolt, tighten it fully all at once. If there are two or more per ring, do not snug one all the way down, and then do the other. Instead, alternate back and forth so they are tightened down equally.

Placing Your Scope For Proper Eye Relief

All scopes have a set distance where you can see the full image without any dark edges. Making sure that your scope is not set too close or too far away ensures the optimum image. After placing it in the rings or mount, add the top half of the rings (or mount) and tighten them just enough so that the scope doesn’t move easily. Find the middle of your magnification range, and bring the scope to your natural shooting position. That could mean shouldering it, or getting behind it as though you were shooting off a bench.

Slide the scope back and forth until you find the center of the range where the image is clear, without dark edges. Carefully adjust the magnification to the highest point, and verify that the image still has no shadowing. If it all looks good, make sure you don’t move it from this position, then move on to the next step.

Leveling Your Scope

One of the most critical steps for accuracy in learning how to mount a scope is leveling. This process can be as complex or as simple as you make it. Some folks attach a bubble level to the barrel to level the rifle. Then they place another bubble level on the scope turret. When both are level, the scope is level. I prefer using a sliding wedge under the scope. The flat part of the wedge contacts the flat part of the scope where the turrets are housed. A quick wiggle of the scope while pushing on the wedge, and the scope should be level.

How to Mount a Scope – Leveling Wedge.

If you’re able to verify that your rifle is level, it’s possible to use a weighted string to level your scope. A heavy brass plumb bob used in construction is ideal, but any fine string with enough weight will work. When suspended from the ceiling (or a rafter in your garage), simply line up your reticle with it. This option requires some space, but it’s also relatively inexpensive. Another option is to use a quality construction level to mark a wall with a level line. I haven’t done that, but apparently some people do.

How to Mount a Scope – Leveling Wedge in Use.

Tightening the Scope Rings or Scope Mount Upper Halves

You’re reading this because you want to learn how to mount a scope properly. And this is another critical step that affects accuracy as well as your scope itself. If you overtighten your scope rings, you may find that your scope does not track well, or it won’t hold zero. Crimp marks in a scope body are signs of overtightening, and it’s probably the number one cause of “accuracy issues”. Most rings suggest 15-18 in-lbs. That’s inch pounds, not foot pounds. No need for gorilla strength, it’s actually not much more than “finger tight” for most people.

How to Mount a Scope – Torque Wrench in Use.

Buy or borrow a torque wrench rated in inch pounds. My Wheeler is nice, because it’s compact and takes driver bits. A decent 1/4″ beam type will offer the same or better accuracy for much less money. If you buy one, you can loan it to friends. When borrowing, there should probably be pizza or tacos involved. However you get your hands on one, get one. Set the torque per the manufacturer, and tighten the screws a little bit at a time.

I start at either ring, do one screw, then go diagonally across. Then I do the other ring in the same pattern before going back to the first ring. Yes, the rings shown are not the best example. Whether each ring has two, four, or six screws, the goal is to torque all screws equally with even gaps in the rings, regardless of the pattern. Once the correct torque is hit, go back and check them all again. Check the level once more before moving on to zero.

How to Zero Your Scope

Now that you know how to mount a scope, it’s time to zero it. You could just take it to the range, shoot some rounds, and then adjust it until your point of impact matches your point of aim. I prefer to get it as close as possible before leaving the house, so I can spend my time shooting, not tinkering. If you have a bolt action, you can pull the bolt, peek through the barrel at a spot on a distant wall, and then adjust your scope to that spot. It’s rough, but will get you close. There’s also a way to work out the math between bore and scope height, but I’m not a fan of math.

How to Mount a Scope – Magnetic Laser Sight.

My system uses a magnetic laser on the end of the barrel. I attach the laser and project it on a wall about 25 yards away. I’m more concerned with windage at this point, but try to get my elevation set too. By setting up my scope to be about an inch low at 25 yards, I’m usually very close at 50, and only minor adjustments are necessary. If I had exactly 50 yards to use as a reference, the laser method would be much more accurate. Depending on the rifle and ammo, it takes less than a magazine full before I’m hitting a 1/2″ target at 50 yards.

Recap: How to Mount a Scope

This isn’t rocket science, it just requires a bit of patience and the correct tools. If you care about accuracy, don’t pay someone else to do this for you. Learn how to mount a scope yourself, and you’ll be ahead of the game. Proper torque, level, and eye relief is really all there is to it. In addition to the tools, start with a good set of rings from a reputable brand.

This past week at the SHOT show in Las Vegas, the TandemKross ADX receiver made its pre-production debut. It still has a way to go before we see it available for sale, but the initial details are very promising. Considering how much innovation we’ve seen from TandemKross in the last few years, that’s no surprise.

TandemKross ADX Receiver Highlights

Following their naming convention (think Manticore X), the actual name is the Advantage X Receiver. This will make sense to those familiar with the TandemKross “Advantage” Picatinny rail with its integrated left-hand charging handle. The ADX has an integrated rail, as expected. But its biggest feature is the patent-pending left-hand charging, with a locking charging handle. There’s also a removable receiver cap, which simplifies maintenance.

With the announcement of their ADX Receiver, TandemKross will now have complete rifles available.

Not immediately apparent in the photos is the ADX Receiver’s finish. It’s actually a proprietary Teflon™ hardcoat anodizing. Offering a combination of wear resistance and smoother cycling, it really brings “high speed, low friction” to the 10/22 format.

Getting into the ADX Receiver Details

Take a look at the locking charging handle on the ADX Receiver. When it’s all the way back, it can be pulled up and locked. Which also means you should be able to give it a good HK-style slap to send it forward. Before you get excited about the stainless charging handle, know that the production version will likely have a black DLC finish to match the TandemKross steel compensators. And don’t fret if you’re so old-school that left-side charging isn’t for you. You can still fit a traditional handle on the right side instead. That’s also where the receiver ejects.

Detail shot of charging handle on the TandemKross ADX Receiver.

TandemKross also chose to make that 0 MOA integrated rail extend past the front of the receiver, but not so far that it interferes with their M-LOK sights. That was one of my concerns when I built a rifle using the TandemKross 10/22 Spitfire barrel. This one provides plenty of rail space for an optic, with the option to run the sights too. It’s not Burger King, yet you still get to have it your way.

Detail shot of integrated rail on the TandemKross ADX Receiver.

Proprietary Stuff

Looking closely, you can see the removable receiver cap. It’s intended to simplify maintenance, which is always a plus. The entire cap is made of Delrin, and it’s attached using the included TandemKross KrossPin. So it functions as both the rear cap and the buffer, with the KrossPin going through it to hold it in place. Firing causes the bolt to travel backwards, contacting the Delrin which surrounds the KrossPin.

At the opposite end, they also include v-block mounting screws. Neither the buffer pin nor the v-block mounting screws should be replaced with aftermarket ones, or even Ruger OEM parts. They’re included because they are required parts for the correct function of the ADX Receiver.

How it fits into the TandemKross Product Lineup

First came the Manticore X “lower”, which replaces a stock or chassis, and includes a complete trigger. Then we got the Spitfire barrel, which is awesome. Clearly, someone was thinking that the best way to tie it all together would be if TandemKross had their own receiver too. And now they do. Or will. Soon. That’s not to say that the receiver is only compatible with the Manticore X trigger and Spitfire barrel. But if you want to build (or buy) a complete TandemKross rifle, that day is almost here.

With the announcement of their ADX Receiver, TandemKross will now have complete rifles available.

ADX Receiver Target Audience

Designing a new receiver just for competition could be a huge misstep, which seems to be acknowledged by TandemKross. With that in mind, the ADX Receiver is of course ideal for high-speed competition, such as Steel Challenge. Yet it also makes an excellent base for a high-end plinker, pack rifle, or even your next hunting rifle. Left-hand charging is not only fast, but advantageous when running a suppressor, especially with some of the lower-velocity ammo available.

There are also enthusiasts who just want the newest, coolest, or most innovative products. And the ADX Receiver will certainly appeal to them too. With a price expected to be under $300, it’s competitive before it’s even assembled. Note that since it’s a receiver, it is considered a firearm, and as such can only be shipped to your FFL. It can also be built into a Charger or rifle though, which is always an advantage in my book.

No release date is set, so I recommend you head over to the TandemKross website, bookmark it, and sign up for their newsletter.
The post TandemKross Announces ADX Receiver appeared first on Industry Outsider.

Creating a 10/22 Build Checklist is long overdue for me. Shooting is more fun than writing, but I realized there was a need for this article. Building a custom rifle from scratch? Or maybe you want to customize the one you got for Christmas? Either way, I’m going to list out all the parts you’ll need.

Before you start, have a plan

Building a rifle or Charger is simple enough, and requires no special tools. What it does require is a plan. Determining your use case before you start will save you money and headaches in the long run. Changing your plan as the build progresses is okay, but having a starting point helps. Do you want a plinker, precision rifle, light field rifle, a Charger, or a “tactical rimfire”? Those are just some “themes” I have seen. Give it some thought as you read through the available options below.

Breaking down your 10/22 Build Checklist, from receiver to sighting system

Covering every manufacturer out there is not possible. So keep in mind that there are more options than what I’ve listed. Focusing on the main components is more important than any single brand. As I created this article, I tried to stick to the well-known brands. In the future, I hope to create a listing of the smaller brands, as it’s important to support the little guys too.

Starting with the receiver, I’ll go through all the parts to complete the firearm, and then discuss sighting system options. Building a precision rifle and topping it with irons or even a reflex sight makes little sense. Likewise, a Charger or Steel Challenge-style rifle is rarely well-matched to a high-magnification scope. Planning your build so that it all works together is the ultimate goal. Here we go!

The foundation of every build is the receiver

Starting with an aftermarket receiver is the first item on my own personal 10/22 Build Checklist. This allows me to build a Charger or rifle, without running afoul of NFA rules. If you’re in the United States, and want a barrel under 16″ without added expense and paperwork, start with an aftermarket receiver. Breaking them down into two categories below, I’ve got the less expensive options listed first. These are generally best for Chargers and lighter rifles. Spending more on a higher-end receiver doesn’t guarantee better accuracy. But you will get a better finish inside and out.

Common lower-priced 10/22 receivers

Sapoutfitters.com is a great source for OEM (Ruger) 10/22 and 22 Charger receivers. They’re all sourced from new, unfired Ruger firearms and available for fixed barrels as well as Takedowns. Ordering is easy, customer service is outstanding. Supporting a small business is the icing on the cake. Want more? Use code “industryoutsider” for a 5% discount.

Brownells BRN-22 is another budget choice. I liked them better when they were under $100, but watch for sales and discounts. Bonus: they include the v-block and hardware.

High-end aftermarket 10/22 receivers

Tactical Innovations offers the widest range of receivers. Looking to start with something other than black or silver? They have quite a few color options. Digging deeper, you’ll find railed and flat-topped receivers, left-hand charging, and takedown options too. Warning: They switched from anodizing to Cerakote for most of their colors, so they won’t match most other manufacturer’s colors.

Summit Precision SP-22 receivers are a new product, backed by extensive experience. Looking ahead, Summit Precision will be offering complete rifles. In the meantime, I have two of their receivers, and they are beautiful. Exceptionally well made with a flawless finish, two of my precision rifles started with these.

KIDD receivers at coolguyguns.com. Offering standard slip fit as well as their own Supergrade receivers, this is a popular choice for precision shooters. Personally, I would only use a KIDD receiver if I were planning a build with their optional rear tang, or their proprietary Supergrade barrel.

Tactical Solutions is a bit of an outlier. Pricing looks a bit steep, until you realize that they include the bolt and charging handle. Inside, they have a dual guide rod system which is supposed to provide smoother cycling. I haven’t tried one, but welcome feedback from anyone who has.

Summit Precision SP-22 Receivers.

Choosing a rifle or Charger barrel

Breaking down barrels into rifle and Charger categories is a necessity for multiple reasons. First, there are just too many options. Second, no one wants to wade through the entire list if they are just looking for one or the other. Resisting the urge to further break down the list, I’m not separating barrels with irons from those without. Nor am I using a separate category for steel barrels vs sleeved/tensioned barrels. But I will explain the difference, for those that aren’t aware. Note also that the “bull” or “heavy” barrel is no longer exclusively 0.920″ in diameter. Some are smaller. It’s important to understand barrel diameter when it comes to choosing a stock or chassis as well.

Traditional barrels are steel, and generally include a taper (sometimes called a “pencil barrel”) or they may be larger diameter (usually called a “bull barrel”). Skinny is lighter, larger diameters are heavier and stiffer. Fluting is sometimes applied for weight savings and heat management. Combining the stiffness of a large diameter barrel with the weight savings of a skinny barrel, we have the sleeved and tensioned barrels. Starting with a smaller diameter barrel, an outer tube of aluminum or carbon fiber is added. This results in lower weight than a similar-sized steel barrel, but improved stiffness over a similar-weight steel barrel. They look cooler too.

If your 10/22 Build Checklist happens to start with a takedown receiver, look for the * denoting that this company has takedown-compatible barrels. Also note that they are listed in no particular order. And I left out some niche and specialty brands, at least for now.

Charger-length barrels

*Volquartsen Charger barrels. Wrapping everything in carbon fiber is the Volquartsen way. All their Charger barrels have it. Takedown barrels include a detachable cantilever rail for consistent zero. If you’re on a tight budget, maybe don’t click their link.

*Summit Precision barrels. Offering eight lengths from six to 14 inches, and 15 colors, Summit Precision is the custom builder’s dream. They have also supplied barrels to some of our favorite brands, like Fletcher Rifle Works and Enoch Industries.

*Acculite barrels. Another builder’s favorite, Acculite (formerly WhistlePigGunBarrelCo, AKA Whistle Pig) has a variety of fixed and takedown barrels with or without flutes and threading. I consider this the value brand, and by that, I don’t mean cheap. Putting one on your 10/22 Build Checklist will get you more than your money’s worth.

*Tactical Solutions barrels. I’m applying the law of diminishing returns here. These are good barrels, but the price makes them a hard sell for me when it comes to a Charger.

KIDD barrels. I’ll admit to buying one, and even to wanting another. But unless you want to build a benchrest Charger, their steel barrels are too heavy for most builds. You can get one with a lightweight fluted aluminum sleeve too.

Beyer Barrels. Okay, their website needs an update, but the barrels are excellent. And when you call, Clint Beyer usually answers. They’ll do custom work if you need special fluting, colors, etc.

FJ Feddersen barrels. I’ve never used them, but they are usually well-regarded, and priced affordably.

Volquartsen’s VF-6 Lightweight Barrel on a custom 22 Charger

Rifle-length barrels

*Summit Precision Barrels. Like their Charger offerings, the Summit Precision barrels are offered in multiple lengths (16.1″, 18.5″, and 20″) and over a dozen colors. Additional options include either the stainless finish at each end, or a matte black FNC finish. These are excellent barrels, striking a balance between weight and performance. They look great too.

*Volquartsen Barrels. Looking for stainless, carbon-sleeved, or a takedown barrel with a cantilever mount? Volquartsen has you covered. They’re also the only brand I can recall with a carbon sleeve and irons.

Acculite barrels. Owning the lightweight bull barrel category, Acculite is hard to beat. You get a lot of barrel for the money. Available with or without flutes and threading, they have a few color options too. Threaded, no flutes is the suppressor owner’s best friend.

KIDD barrels. Going out on a limb, I’m going to share one truth, and one unpopular opinion. If your 10/22 Build Checklist includes the words “Match rifle”, you probably want a KIDD match barrel. They’re the default for most shooters wanting to throw together a precision 10/22 and come with Tony’s MOA guarantee. At the opposite end, I’d skip their lightweight and ultra lightweight barrels. Nothing wrong with them, I just don’t think they’re worth the asking price when similar performance is available elsewhere for less.

Green Mountain barrels. Looking for a steel barrel that shoots great, but you’re on a budget? This is the brand for you. Heavy, tapered, threaded, fluted, stainless, blued or iron sight-equipped, they have them all.

*Tactical Solutions barrels. They’ve got color options, threading, and flutes. But the real winner is their X-Ring takedown barrels equipped with Williams fiber optic sights. Forget about zero issues and the extra weight of scopes or reflex sights. Go light and fast.

Beyer Barrels. Again, the website is pretty dated. The good news is that you can pretty much just call and tell them what you want, and they’ll make it.

FJ Feddersen barrels. Another good option for steel barrels. Plenty of different contours and iron sight options.

Custom Ruger 10/22 pattern rifle with Magpul Hunter X-22 stock, Vortex scope and Acculite barrel.

Stock or chassis? Aluminum, wood, or polymer?

Now that you’ve added the barrel to your 10/22 Build Checklist, you can choose your stock or chassis. This step comes after the barrel selection, as the barrel diameter may determine or limit your choices. Stocks are usually wood or polymer. Chassis options include polymer or aluminum. For our categorization here, stocks are traditional (mostly) shapes in wood or polymer. Listings under the chassis categories will be limited to those machined from aluminum. That’s an oversimplification, but we’re not here to split hairs.

10/22 stock options

*Magpul 10/22 stocks are offered in a handful of colors for fixed and takedown rifles. Their Backpacker is the default choice for takedowns. If you’re on a budget, the new(ish) Magpul MOE X-22 stock is an excellent choice. Light, ergonomic, and it will accommodate tapered and heavy barrels. I expect to see many will have this on their 10/22 Build Checklist in 2025.

*Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks is known mostly for its laminated wood stocks. Combining 37 thin layers of colored wood under immense heat and pressure, they’re as attractive as they are durable. Available in a variety of shapes and colors, you’ll find some sweet customization options like checkering and laser engraving. And each one is made to order.

KRG Bravo rimfire stocks straddle the line between a stock and chassis (my review of the KRG Bravo refers to it as a chassis). Building one out with their extensive options list allows you to get a very custom and ergonomic fit from these polymer stocks.

The Victor Company Titan is a similar polymer stock, with a much smaller accessory list. But it’s all business.

10//22 chassis options

*PMACA was my first 10/22 chassis, and they are probably the least expensive option in an aluminum chassis. Utilizing AR grips and stocks, they have takedown models as well.

*Midwest Industries offers cool chassis options for fixed barrel and takedowns. They’re a good choice if AR grips and stocks are more important than saving weight.

Enoch Industries is the go-to for suppressor lovers. Combining light weight, pleasing aesthetics, and a wide barrel channel, they’re a great fit if you want a short barrel and fat suppressor.

MDT offers their Oryx rifle chassis for the 10/22 action. Making great shooting products in Canada, I really like this company. They have great videos available to help hone your skills. I just can’t seem to find a chassis of theirs that I like.

*Crazy Ivan offers what many consider the best all-around chassis. Sadly, the owner passed away a few years ago. Highly prized if you can find one, his family has tried to keep the business going. If this is on your 10/22 Build Checklist, you may want to select an alternate as well.

Woox breaks all the rules. Mixing beautiful hardwoods with machined aluminum, they offer stocks and chassis systems. Definitely not for the budget builders, but nice to look at.

PMACA “DMR” based on the Ruger 10/22

Triggers

When the Ruger 10/22 first came out, the trigger was designed for mass production. not precision. In other words, a heavy, somewhat gritty trigger. Other than a switch from aluminum to polymer housings, not much has really changed. Regardless of opinions stated elsewhere, the newer polymer versions are better. They have tighter tolerances and are generally better overall. Do not pay extra for a used aluminum housing unless you have a specific need for one. Ruger did release a BX trigger, which is an OEM unit with slightly improved internals. They are not consistent, trigger to trigger, so it pays to test one before you buy. They even package them so you can test it.

When choosing the trigger to add to your 10/22 Build Checklist, consider your application. A BX may be fine for plinking or hunting. Shooting fast, such as Steel Challenge, or doing some precision work generally requires a lighter trigger. Luckily, there are two major options. Upgrading the internals of an OEM housing is pretty economical, with good results. Replacing the entire trigger group with an aftermarket unit is another option. Splitting the difference, at least one company modifies OEM trigger units and then sells them. Something to keep in mind is that not all aftermarket housings are compatible with every stock or chassis.

Volquartsen TG2000 triggers are available in four colors. Pull weight is fixed at 2.25 lbs, but they are adjustable for pre and over-travel.

Bolts

Keeping the price of their rifles down is important to Ruger. This is why the OEM bolt is cast instead of CNC machined. It saves time and money, and they go bang nearly every time. Comparing a cast bolt to an aftermarket CNC bolt, there are many differences. Starting with the headspace, this critical fit between bolt and barrel is one of the keys to consistent ignition and accuracy. Next is the cross pin over the firing pin. Without it, the firing pin can bounce around a bit, causing inconsistent ignition. Finally, the bottom rear edge is radiused and polished. This allows the bolt to travel over the hammer smoothly, with less resistance.

While they’re making aftermarket bolts look better, the internal components are better too. That firing pin is generally harder, for longer wear. Reshaping the tip is done to improve ignition. Extractors are harder as well, and the edge is usually sharper, sometimes cut at 89 instead of 90 degrees, for more aggressive extraction. Millions of rifles still have their factory bolts. Buying an aftermarket unit will offer more reliable and consistent ignition and extraction. So be sure to budget for one in your 10/22 Build Checklist.

Charging handles

As we near the end of our 10/22 Build Checklist, we come to one of the most overlooked parts. Charging handles are made up of a guide rod, a spring and a handle. Do not get a cheap one from the online auction place, or the “rainforest” website. Machining a true (straight) rod is critical for smooth operation. And the spring has to have the correct amount of resistance. If you try to save a few bucks, you will probably end up with some cycling issues. So I’ll make this easy, and list the ones I have used without any issues. Oh, the OEM unit is fine too, most of the time. Until it isn’t.

TandemKross Spartan Skeletonized charging handle. Available in red, black or silver. Smooth and reliable.

KIDD 10/22 charging handles. Pricing is premium, but so is the quality. Comes with different springs so you can fine-tune it to your ammo selection.

Tactical Innovations 10/22 charging handles. Choosing a color is probably the most difficult part here. Plenty of options.

Those parts you almost forgot about

Rounding out your 10/22 Build Checklist are a handful of parts that sometimes get overlooked. Holding the trigger group to the receiver are the trigger pins. I recommend TandemKross KrossPins as they are easy to get in and out, yet won’t fall out. Above and behind them is the bolt stop pin, which is usually replaced with a non-steel option. Polymer is quieter, which improves the suppressed shooting experience. With the exception of the Brownells receiver, most don’t include a v-block and screws. These are necessary for attaching the barrel to the receiver.

Confusing matters, the action screw which attaches the receiver to a stock or chassis is also referred to as a “takedown screw”. Building a takedown requires two, you’ll only need one for fixed barrel builds. Some stocks and chassis models include them in proprietary lengths, others don’t include them at all. Checking before ordering your stock or chassis will save you some grief.

TandemKross KrossPins for the Ruger 10/22

Sighting options

After completing the required parts of your 10/22 Build Checklist, it’s time to figure out sighting options. Listing brands would be too difficult, so I’m only offering the types for now. Iron sights are basic, usually inexpensive, and are included with some barrels. Well, most “irons” are now fiber optics when it comes to the 10/22. If your barrel doesn’t include them, adding them later can be pricey. Your stock or chassis should have a low cheek rest to accommodate them too.

Red (or green) dots are compact (usually) electric sights that are generally used where target acquisition speed is more important than precision. Selecting the right one for your application usually comes down to physical size, color, reticle type/size, and magnification. Rounding out the sighting systems are scopes. LPVO (Low Power Variable Optics) are gaining popularity for shorter ranges, and come in 1-4x to 1-8x. Traditional compact rimfire scope ranges are 2-7x, 3-9x, and 4-12x, but 6-24x and 5-25x are not uncommon for longer range or precision shooting. The rifle in the main photo of this article is wearing a Vortex Venom 5-25×56 scope.

Invest in Your Firearms

The Real Avid Accu-Punch Master Set is an essential investment for anyone who takes pride in their firearms. With its superior quality, innovative design, and organized layout, this kit will help you take your gun maintenance and modification to the next level. I’m on the Real Avid mailing list, and loving seeing companies offer kits like this. Over the years, I’ve bent and broken cheap punches. Scratched a few firearms too. And struggled starting pins. If I looked at what I have wasted on cheaper tools, damaged finishes, and paying someone else, this kit is an absolute bargain. Find it and other great tools for basic maintenance to advanced gunsmithing at realavid.com.
The post Get Punched by Real Avid appeared first on Industry Outsider.

Strike Industries just announced that their new Strike Enhanced Grip Module for P365 FCUs is available and is being shipped out. All pre-orders have been fulfilled.

Compatibility FAQs:

Pre-existing holsters: Some may fit with a weapon-mounted light. SI is working with Hilliker Holster for custom options.

Manual safety FCUs: Yes, the grip has marked cut-out areas for modification (Dremel, file) to accommodate a manual safety.

CA model compatibility: Yes, the manual safety FCU model and CA model (with mag disconnect) are compatible, but require modification.

10rd magazine compatibility: Yes, the P365X/XL 10rd magazine fits flush.

XL grip: Yes, this is based on the Sig “X/XL” style grip.

Future plans: Yes, XL or Macro versions and P320 grips are planned. This grip module also accepts XMacro and XMacro Tac Ops slides with a perfect dust cover fit.

Flush-fitting magazines: The P365X/XL 10-round magazine and 12-round magazines with specific Sig base extensions fit flush. 15-round and 17-round magazines will protrude.

Compatible lights: Only SureFire XSC-B and Olight PL Mini 2 (“Valkyrie” and “Baldr”) are confirmed to fit. Streamlight TLR-7A/7X may not fit reliably.

.380 FCU compatibility: Yes, this should work with .380 P365 FCUs. Acquire the correct recoil spring, barrel, and magazine for your caliber. Some 12r round .380 P365 magazines are pinned to 10rds for capacity restrictions.

Here’s a short video about it:

?

Currently, these grip modules are available in both Blackline and FDEline. In the photo below, the left one is the Blackline model with a flush 12-round magazine. On the right is a P365 in FDEline with a 15-round magazine. The FDE setup also includes a Strike MRDS optic plate adapter.

Strike Enhanced Grip Module for P365 FCUs.

Please note:

Worried about compatibility with manual safety FCUs? Don’t sweat it. It’s already built into every P365 Strike Enhanced Grip Module. However, this requires modification and some fitment may be required. The cut-out areas are marked and outlined as a guide. Depending on the generation of FCU, the safety cut-out area may need to be larger than the guideline provided.
