I’ve been following this story for a while now, and it looks like it’s pretty much reached the end here.
I don’t know how many cyclists outside Australia are aware of the Hell Ride in Melbourne, but any of us that have ridden in a pack on public roads know how things can sometimes get out of hand. What happened in this case was that a cyclist was so consumed with the thought of his stopping for a light causing a chain reaction collision, that he ran the light and ended up striking an old man, who subsequently died.
I find this very disturbing, and it can’t possibly be good for the image of our sport.
The saddest part about this is that none of it surprises me. I stopped riding with the bunches in Surfers Paradise several years ago for largely the same reason.
