Happy October 22nd, or 10/22 day, which is the official holiday for Ruger 10/22 fans. This year, I’m doing things a bit differently, and sharing ten of my favorite 10/22 articles from the past. They cover complete rifles, individual accessories, and some helpful articles full of upgrades. In no particular order. The goal is to offer a bit of inspiration, but also put the “best of the best” all on one page for easy reference. So here we go.
Luth-AR MCA-22 chassis
The MCA-22 from Luth-AR is a one-piece, all-inclusive chassis. Lightweight, ergonomic, and highly adjustable. It’s all glass-filled nylon with aluminum rods and steel hardware. Works with factory taper barrels up to .920″ barrels. All sorts of adjustments can be done, and plenty of attachment points too. Use it for a target build, hunting rifle, or Steel Challenge-style build. It’s super versatile. Read my original article here.
My 10/22 “Field Rifle”
This particular rifle is based on the most popular upgrades found on redditor’s rifles. From the Magpul stock to the Acculite barrel to the internals, its build list is simply upgrades that get suggested over and over again. And for good reason. It’s reliable, accurate, and light enough to carry all day. On top of that, it’s just a fun shooter, and an excellent suppressor host. Found under One from the safe: My Ruger 10/22 “Field Rifle”.
High Tower Armory 10/22 Magazine Coupler
If you live in a restricted state, and Canada, anything over ten rounds is somehow seen as threatening. So here’s an inexpensive solution to have 20 rounds easily accessible. This simple coupler allows combining two magazines into one compact package. No permanent modifications are required, and it even includes the necessary tool. I wrote about it here.
Common Ruger 10/22 upgrades
This is easily one of my most popular reference articles. It contains a bunch of simple and basic upgrades for any new 10/22 owner. As a bonus, most are $20 or less. I noticed that some of the items may get mentioned here again as well, but that’s only because they are smart choice. So find the common Ruger 10/22 upgrades here.
The performance upgrades article
If the link above was part one, this is part two. It’s a more comprehensive article, with a lot more expensive upgrades. But it’s another good resource (when I remember to update it). Eventually, it will list all the brands that have proven to offer both good products, and trustworthy customer service. Find the performance upgrades article here.
Summit Precision barrels
Summit Precision offers custom stainless and carbon fiber barrels that are lighter, stiffer, and more accurate than OEM barrels. And they are available in more than a dozen different colors. From stealthy matte black carbon to a vibrant pink, they are a great addition to any custom build. And they can be found on sale for 10/22 Day as well. Check out my overview of them here.
TandemKross Manticore Trigger
When you have money to burn, the TandemKross Manticore Trigger is a quick way to drop $374.99 on your rifle. It’s not the lightest trigger out there, but it does go down to around 2 pounds. What it does offer is a lot of adjustability for pull weight, as well as pre and post-travel. From there, it also packs in several features not found together on other triggers. That includes the push or pull Fireswitch magazine release, Cornerstone rotary/toggle safety, and Bolt Keeper bolt lock/release. I covered the TandemKross Manticore trigger in detail here.
TandemKross Ultimate Trigger Kit, Velocity Trigger, and KIDD “Trigger job”
If you like the flat trigger and want a light pull and clean break without spending more than a stock rifle costs, there are other options. I like the TandemKross Ultimate Trigger Kit because it’s a huge upgrade over the OEM trigger, or even the Ruger BX, for a reasonable price. Definitely one of my favorites. Velocity offers another great trigger, with plenty of great color options too. And KIDD’s “Trigger job” utilizes drop-on parts if you want a stealthy factory look for your improved trigger. Ultimate Trigger Kit article here. Velocity here.
Acculite Barrels for the 10/22
Sure, it’s an opinion, but it’s backed by fact. Acculite (formerly WhistelPig) is the best all-around value for a barrel upgrade. There are lighter options, and more accurate (also heavier though) options. You can also spend less, or a lot more. But no other barrel strikes the same balance of accuracy and weight for your dollar. Color options are very limited, and the only other options are flutes or no flutes, and threaded or unthreaded. Either way, you can’t go wrong. My Acculite article is here.
Fletcher Rifle Works Open Top 11/22 receiver
I’m including the 11/22 in this 10/22 Day article because it represents innovation in this space. While it may not be for everyone, it’s an example of thinking outside the box. With a sliding receiver cover pinned in place, it can make the chore of cleaning much easier. Mine is currently used for a suppressor host, as it gets filthy fast. Check out my Open Top 11/22 article here.
Honorable mentions
No 10/22 Day article would be complete without at least mentioning Crazy Ivan. Sadly, the founder, my friend Karl, passed away much too soon. But his chassis’ are still available, and the basis of some of the best lightweight builds. They are certainly my favorite.
For outright creativity, my blunderbuss was hard to beat. If you have a 22 Charger and an old wood stock, it’s a fun project. I hope visitors find some inspiration there.
This rifle is the lead photo for this article, with good reason. It’s my personal “No holds barred” build. Over 2-1/2 years, it has evolved from a pretty solid shooter into an 11+ pound tack driver. And it’s an excellent example of what can be done with this platform, making it the perfect way to represent 10/22 Day. Check out the story of its evolution here.
